Just a question I want to visit the United States next year.
Will my posts on this board be a problem or am I being paranoid?

Actually, I think it's pretty safe to say Bush is an evil nutcase.

That ENTROPY could come in real handy.

The problem is, you still need an internet connection. Your ISP could be regulated into stopping people from using it. Unless you find a free ISP that anyone can dial into.

Why? We don't like visitors. I thought we were making that clear, what with building walls along the border and all.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'W')ill my posts on this board be a problem or am I being paranoid?

You are paranoid.

If you're talking about terrorist crap or something, sure, your ass will get a one way ticket to Gitmo and it sucks to be you. If you're talking about peakoil, that's mainstream, no one is going to care.

Anyway, if Steven Colbert can stand in front of Bush and rip him a new one for an hour in front of hundreds of people and live to broadcast the next day, I think we're probably safe for a little while longer.

I don't worry so much about overt censorship in the US; realistically a larger concern is the proliferation of mindless junque that swamps out the network and wastes peoples' cognitive bandwidth on superficial distractions.

I'll worry about it more if, comes the day after Election Day, we still have a one-party state (hey Republicans: hold your nose and vote for a Democrat. It's not about Democrats per se, it's about competition and checks & balances!).

However, Entropy, along with cryptographic and steganographic tools, can be considered as a First Amendment analogue to Second Amendment firearms: something you can keep & bear in order to protect your freedom should the need ever arise. And there's no time like the present to get started.

I'm sure that most people who are caught for posting content that their country deems illegal have provided their information. Busting people by IP address in large numbers isn't feasible. It takes a fair amount of investigation through a large pool of ISPs to find the identity through IP address alone. Governments may make examples of a small number of the loudest protestors, but it would be too expensive to catch large numbers. We are relatively safe just by being part of the crowd.

If you are still worried, you can purchase access to run your internet connection through a foreign proxy server. The only way a government can truly control the flow of information is if it shut down all private ISPs and required all internet users to use a government run ISP. Until that happens, I wouldn't worry. Just don't be a fool and post information about who you are.

I've thought about doing that ... but then if you were a blackmailer or a goverment spook, where would you find the richest pickings?

Yep, at proxy servers!

I wonder how many are actually "honey pots" set up to attract those who have secret commercial or other messages to send, or who wish to view political websites?

I wonder how many are legit .. BUT ... have their traffic tapped?

It's what I would do if I were a government spook!

I envision a time, not too far away, where we will need to be unplugged from the main arteries. I can see and entropy like systems that reliles on portable devices connected together and relaying messages. Something like an electronic version of pony express.

This already exists in some cities, as a WLAN network of volunteering nodes - of course at some point one of these has to plug into a main artery, but even if this is cut the net would still consist within the city, not controlled by government or corporations. Add to that cryptography, and voila...

Agree! And as long as a minority use "strong" cryptography, I would monitor for encrypted messages. There is no mathematical proof for the absence of an analytical solution to factorizing large numbers. The NSA might have cracked it since ten years, and might be able to read all PGP-encrypted stuff without much effort. They sure have sponsored enough of the brightest matematicians out there, and IF they have cracked it, they would guard the secret even more than the Manhattan project.

Just imagine! By encrypting your message, you kind of "flag" it for interception. It's like shooting fish in a barrel - read only the encrypted messages, they contain most of the goodies....

I didnt see "America" listed in there anywhere.
In fact, I didnt see any mention of any country in North America.

I guess our tinfoil hat wearing libtards are getting spooked by the boogie man again.

Half jokingly of course, there is actually a case going on right now about blogs and freedom of speech.

It's hard to say. I have seen copies of e-mails from another list I'm on with all the headers from the FBI agents forwarding them around. They were released as part of a FOIA lawsuit by the ACLU. The same list was more recently infiltrated by someone who is now known to be an FBI informant.

My guess is that PO.com is seen more in the political theory realm rather than the political activity realm and therefore isn't that interesting to them. It is almost certain that your web activity here has passed through the NSA's filters. The question is whether it interested anyone enough to go in a file and whether that file ever made it out of Ft. Meade.

My guess is that if you have your papers in order and don't act suspicious, you will sail through imigration.

Yes I want to go to New York.
I may not like Bush and his goverment and I don't like those who voted for him but I would still like to visit the Big Apple.
Funny thing I love my own country but I hate the goverment.

People on the right hated the government when Clinton was running the show. I'm starting to wonder if maybe we just need to chill a bit. Clinton stomped on the rights I cared about and was soundly punished for his folly by the loss of congress. I wonder if a similar thing will happen to Bush now. Structurally, I'm not certain the House is in play in a real sense, but the Senate is always in play and could be a good object lesson. If the lesson is well taught maybe we'll end up with Democrats who'll leave the 2nd amendment alone, and Republicans who'll leave the 1st amendment alone. One can alway hope...

I've been there. Really you're not missing much. If you want the same effect, just get 15 friends, jam yourselves into an elevator, have someone puke on the floor, then turn loose a half pound of cockroaches and three rats. It'll be just like being in New York City, but without the plane ticket. Ohh yeah. You might want to play a very loud tape recording of car horns and people yelling at eachother to help get the proper ambiance.
