NASCAR: An uphill battle

Unread postby Ghog » Tue 25 Apr 2006, 16:43:05

The responses to this person's topic were 'interesting'. Here is how it started.
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'M')y numbers may be off, but follow me on this....
If there are 40 cars per race and the race is 500 miles...that's 20000miles, right?
If those cars get about 6 MPG, that's about 3333.3 gallons of gas per race!
This doesn't include tome trials, practice laps, driver training, idling time and whatever a NASCAR car does.
NASCAR, hot rods, mini-trucks, stock car, Formula 1, there are a lot of races out there. Aren't we having a oil supply issue right now?

http://forums.backpage.com/showthread.php?t=1302

Some great quotes in response:
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'y')our forgeting that we plenty of oil , just our president doesn't have an abundance of brains
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'O')h go pound granola you fruit cake! Unless you drive an electric car or ride a horse piss off! The teams pay for that fuel (which costs about $4.00 a gallon because is special high octane fuel) and folks come to watch, people make money, its capatialism at its best. What's next, driving to a baseball game is un-Amercian? If you don't like it go to Canada and watch curling!
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'A')ND BY YOUR RESPONSES I SEE YOUR EITHER THE VILLAGE IDIOT AND/ OR A CONBINATION OF CRACK PARENTS AND BEING DROPPED ON YOUR HEAD OR PERHAPS YOU TOOK SECOND IN A PARACHUTE-LESS SKYDIVING CONTEST! THE ONLY WASTE OF RESOURCES I SEE IS YOUR BRAIN CAPACITY WHEN YOU TRY TO THINK.....
60,000 PEOPLE GO TO A FOOTBALL GAME, THEY TAKE 20,000 CARS, IS THAT A WASTE OF RESOURCE? HOW ABOUT THE GAS WASTED IN TRAFFIC WHILE LEAVING THE GAME? MAYBE YOU SHOULD BAN PEOPLE DRIVING TO SUNDAY CHURCH! YOU'RE OPENING COMMENT IS ABOUT THE DUMBEST THING I'VE EVER SEEN HERE AND I AM BEING NICE! CRANKY OLD MAN? AT LEAST I'M NOT A PINKO IDIOT WHO WOULD WRITE SOMETHING LIKE THIS UNDER A SPORTS SECTION. BOTTOM LINE, YOU'RE A MORON!
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'I')f you had a 1/16 of a brain you would know there is more shale oil in Colorado than all the oil in Saudi Arabia. Huge amounts of oil exisit in the US but because of your idiot enviornmentalists it sits there. Its a matter of drilling for it and keeping the freakazoid enviornmentalists (which you probably are) in check.
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'I') GUESS FIRING UP THE TAILGATE BBQ IS BAD FOR AMERICA TOO, BURING UP ALL THAT NATURAL GAS TO COOK UP SOME RIBS AND BEANS THAT WILL MAKE SOME MORE NATURAL GAS!!!!

This is America! We are in trouble.

I had an interesting argument in the chat rooms of Battle.net with a twenty something american who had done some research into energy and economics. It's funny how many "educated" people will refuse to actually realize certain key facts about the way we live and the real cost involved in what we do.

They don't see how much harder it is to extract oil from shales or tar sands, they just see the end product, a barrel of oil, and 1 trillion barrels of it in tar sands and shale. These people will never be convinced, ever, until the gas station is out of gas permanently. Kind of sucks in a way, but the more ignorance there is the better it is for the preparers.

I think what intrigued me the most was the level of hostility over something I personally find inconsequential (NASCAR). In other words, don't upset the apple cart.

A whole point? You mean you weren't aware of the stupidity out there?!?! Maybe it's time to leave your bunker for a few hours. You know, to get some more ammo, just leave some for the rest of us. :)

The current trends are a bit disturbing. Rather than reduce our drawdown of finite oil supplies, the trend is to rip up the candadian wilderness, burn down the forests of borneo and sumatra, or convert agricultural crops to fuel instead of food in a desperate attempt to maintain our current levels of consumption.

As killjoy said, it may be time to assess your doomerosity index and make the appropriate adjustments.

Well, at least you don't have to worry about these two Nascar idoits.

"Fans commonly use poles to fly flags touting their favorite driver.

Witnesses said Wright and Stell were attempting to anchor a flagpole when it was caught by wind and pushed into power lines running along a road outside the track."

I take it you were crusading to spread the idea of peak oil.

What did you intend to accomplish? Maybe you wanted to save these fellows from the consequences of this civilization requiring oil to sustain 6.5 billion, although I cannot imagine how you intended to do that.

Perhaps the message here is that the real idiot is not so much the mass, but rather the one who would try to inform them to his own disadvantage. Since there are a limited number of seats on the lifeboats, why would you want to tell? You need a mirror into which to look at yourself.

This "idiot" found responses in a random forum interesting and wanted to share the uneducated perceptions of the general population with fellow POers. Perhaps the real idiot is one who spends more time typing and less time reading.

That's ok because this...

This is why I no longer make any self-sacrifice to conserve. Every gallon you save is just another that idiots like this will piss away for fun. I prefer to use the gallons I can command with my dollars to facilitate my getting ready for the coming times.

As a huge sports fan who cannot understand motorsports and why anyone would enjoy it I congradulate the guy who posted about Nascar. Winding up motorsports fans is great fun but you could make fun of them for ever and it is easy. The responces were what you would expect. Uphill battle? More like Up the Eiger batlle.

It does lead to what will happen to sport post PO and even though a lot of people on this forum may not care about sport with more pressing topics to consider, it should be interesting. Hopefully we'll move away from the sedantary watching of pro athletes and head back to a more amatuer participation based sporting life. More social interaction, community involvment, exercise etc. And hopefully an end to motor[sport?].

How about children's sports?

Unread postby Waterthrush » Wed 26 Apr 2006, 06:11:42

Professional sports are one subject, but why not focus on something that is a consistent money-loser and a drain on local governments. The money spent on children's sports is DESPERATELY needed elsewhere by local governments. I'm not advocating a shutdown, just a cutback. Our local school board keeps trying to push through budgets containing millions for "upgraded sports facilities." I wish they would start cutting back - the number of games per season, the amount of travel, the number of attendants - I mean, there are now personal trainers attending to middle school athletes. I can imagine the costs to schools for sports insurance.

Rather, spend some of the money on more intramural and recreational sports, stuff the kids will truly use all their lives, and will benefit more of them at a time when they all need to be active.

And, scotch the "travel teams" for ten year old soccer players. They are NOT going to get professional contracts.

Intramurals and rec leagues - that would save a lot of fuel and a lot of school budget money.
