Here at the Monolithic Mortgage Company with 5000 employees in Plano,Tx- we had the power go out twice. May be related, may not.

The blackouts in Texas have made national news. CNN is covering the story.

CNN says 80% of Texas is affected.

They say the blackouts are intentional, but automatic, to balance the grid and keep it stable.

Apparently a number of plants were taken down for maintenance this month, they got a surprise heat wave today, and everyone flipped the AC on at the same time.

How about that, rolling brownouts in D/FW.

http://www.nbc5i.com/news/8777651/detail.html

The areas listed like Irving are high in Commerce(everyone's gone home) and low income housing.

No Brownouts in Frisco or Plano yet eh?

We had a power outage today at 2:40 PM near Springfield MO. Don't know if it's related.

Heck it's not even summer yet.

Can you say, "Ol-du-vai"?

Richard C. Duncan probably has a lot of extra email to process today.

I work a few blocks west of downtown Austin and didn't notice anything went wrong until I watched the news this evening. I got lucky, I guess...

I seriously doubt it. According to him the stock market should be at like 4000, there should be breadlines around the block in every major US city and we should all be hunting rats with bows and arrows.

I can't believe that some peak loading of an electrical grid somewhere fired from natural gas and coal has ANYONE believing that silly paper of his.

I mean, how WRONG do people have to be before others don't pay attention to out of date hysteria which wasn't true 10 years ago and isn't any truer today?

Oldavai will take atleast 30 years to unfold. It could very well happen if the proper steps are not taken to avoid it. If the stock market really did crash to 4000 and there were nation wide backouts it might really wake people up. Serious steps need to be taken and now but politically it can't be done. We need to take away America's toys including their cars and teach them how to farm.

Record high temperatures in April - nope, can't possibly have anything to do with global warming. But power plants didn't seem to function so well
in the pleasant April weather:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'A')s temperatures climbed into the upper 90s _ and even to triple digits _ thousands of Texans found themselves without power as energy companies heeded an emergency call from the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, which runs the state's electricity grid. Police rushed to intersections to direct traffic during the afternoon rush hour.

As much as 15 percent of the state's power supply was already off-line for seasonal maintenance to brace for the summer's energy usage peaks. Then four power-generating plants shut down unexpectedly amid the stifling heat, said ERCOT spokesman Paul Wattles.

A recorded high of 101 degrees at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport broke the previous high of 94, set in 1913 and matched in 1925, according to the weather service. Temperatures reached 107 degrees in Laredo.

This reminds me of the recent documentary I saw about Enron.
A modern society based on ripping eachother appart, based on rumours and crap.

So what if there is an outage?
It's not like the end of the world.
Offcourse. We have to put it on the news, make it a major event and boost commodity prices as a result.
We must also invade some country for the same reason, and God knows what else.

I experience a lot of power outages in my lifetime. At least 100, and up to 6-8 hours. There was no big deal. You could always find something better to do while waiting for the power to come back.
Then everything resumed as normal, and there was no big deal about it.

The morning news said we should expect more rolling blackouts and 97-100 degree temps. The good news is we are getting a cool front tommorow and for Wed the high should be 78.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'W')e don't have time to waste. We live on a razor-thin margin where time is money . . .

Speaking of which...came across this story today:

Man ticketed for interfering with traffic signals

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'L')ONGMONT, Colo. - A man who said he bought a device that let him change traffic lights from red to green received a $50 ticket for suspicion of interfering with a traffic signal.

Jason Niccum of Longmont said the device, which he bought on eBay for $100, helped him cut his time driving to work.

“I guess in the two years I had it, that thing paid for itself,” he told the Daily Times-Call on Wednesday.
