Not one US city in the top-25 best cities of the world

Unread postby lorenzo » Thu 13 Apr 2006, 09:53:18

http://www.citymayors.com/features/quality_survey.html

According to the highly respected annual Mercer Consulting Report on the cities with the best quality of life in the world, there is not one US city in the top 25 of best cities in the world.

By way of contrast there are 15 European cities in the top 25, with Zurich heading the rank, and 5 Canadian cities with Vancouver at number 3.

Amazing, to say the least.

Ah, Vancouver BC, where anything that is not padlocked is stolen by an army of homeless drug addicts. I know it well.

Let me just say that Vancouver at number 3 makes me a bit skeptical about the criteria used in this evaluation. I couldn't wait to return to my lower quality of life in the US.

Yeah um...Vancouver doesn't belong *anywhere near* the top 5.

-Poorest neighborhood in the industrialized world
-Highest incidence of drug use in the industrialized world
-More people below the poverty line than anywhere in Canada except Toronto
-Lowest rental unit vacancy rate in the country (less than 0.5% IIRC)
-Highest homeless rate in the country
-Focal point in the north american human sex trafficing market

You couldn't PAY me to live there.

Vancouver is beautiful and possibly the big city to which I would go if had lots of money. Of course, lots of money insulates you from most of the problems others have mentioned. Lists like this usually imply the person has enough money to actually live well in the city - otherwise there is no way Washington DC deserves to be on this list!

And which countries have the higher suicide rates?

That's right, Australia, France, Germany, Japan, Switzerland, Finland, Sweden, and the rest of your top 25 cities list.

It's difficult to compare a city to a city based on a few somewhat random statistics.

Personally, I would consider a nation's suicide rate to be a useful indicator of that nation's population's happiness. Clearly the people of Europe are not significantly happier than the people of the United States.

Meh, Vancouver is not for everybody but I love it. the air is always fresh, the greenery is spectacular, the women are beautiful and where else can you escape suburbia in under an hour. I have lived here for many years and have never had anything stolen, then again I don't drive and don't have a lot of stuff to be stolen. This is not a place to buy a house right now, the traffic can be horrendous and certain "hoods" are trouble, but hey - all of that is easily avoided.

Growing up as a kid I always had this dream of moving stateside, those days are long gone but I can't even think of one particular reason why. I have been to a handful of US cities and none of them really turned my crank, the finger lakes area of NY is nice, Florida is OK for a vacation but would never want to live there. Hmmm, maybe Oregon would be nice :)

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Tyler_JC', 'A')nd which countries have the higher suicide rates?

I got a hunch this is directly related to the level of industrialization and disconnect from nature. Ever wonder why monkeys in a zoo never look very happy?

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('pstarr', 'W')hat a stupid list. NYC and San Francisco are missing. The former is the Most Exciting and Important City in the World, the latter the most Beautiful--The Shining City on the Hill. :)

From the linked page:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'C')ities are ranked against New York as the base city, which has an index score of 100.

...

28 28 San Francisco USA 103.2
46 46 New York City USA 100.0

It seems to me that the predominant factor for these ratings was public transit. It mentions this as one of the criteria, but I think it was probably the highest criteria. Where is Denver? It's probably not there, because, it's public transportation doesn't reach enough areas. Probably the same can be said for Dallas, Phoenix, St. Louis, and Minneapolis/St. Paul.

I'm not sure about that.

Industrialization should lead to higher suicide rates, right?

Well look at the rankings.

1. Lithuania (technological backwater, depressed FSU)
2. Russia (technological backwater, depressed FSU)
3. Latvia (technological backwater, depressed FSU)
4. Estonia (technological backwater, depressed FSU)
5. Belarus (technological backwater, depressed FSU)
6. Hungary (technological backwater, depressed FSU)
7. Sri Lanka (technological backwater, political mess)
8. Slovenia (technological backwater, depressed FSU)
9. Finland (1st world, but cold and dark and full of alcoholics...yet somehow desireable according to Lorenzo's link)
10. Kazakstan (technological backwater, depressed FSU)
11. Ukraine (technological backwater, depressed FSU)
12. Belgium (1st world, Lorenzo lives there, mostly flat, I have no idea why it's number 12)
...
Notice a pattern?

The United States is down on the list at number 31 after much of the European Union. A majority of Europeans live in countries whose citizens are more unhappy than the average American.

And yet somehow none of America's cities are better than 27 on the list of the world's best cities? Come now. Clearly there is some kind of disconnect here.

Maybe the criteria used to pick the best city needs to be widened.

I suggest looking at this list.

City Brand Index

"Overall, New York ranks seventh, while Los Angeles ranks eighth. San Francisco and Washington, D.C. come in 11 th and 14 th, respectively."

"In addition to having a good reputation for its cultural contributions, New York is America’s city of opportunity, coming in second place in the Potential category after London."

But this debate will never end because Lorenzo and I sit on opposite ends of the sandbox and neither of us has a long enough shovel to smack the other person. Instead we must settle for throwing sand at each other.

I'm not sure if that previous thought blurb made any sense. I haven't really slept for about 30 hours.

Yeah, I just kind of threw that comment out there. I think cities very far north or south of the equator are probably very depressing around the winter solstice, dirty and polluted cities are depressing. Too many factors to factor. One weird thing about suicide is that it is almost non-existent in some of the most unlikely places, like remote little communities in Africa and South America and what not. Where you find dirty factories you find depressed people, any workplace that treats hordes of humans as production robots of one kind or another is depressing. All I can say is that most people could be happy in most places with the right balance of nature, community, work and play er something like that.

The U.S. is at number 31 only because murders don't count as suicides.

Theres something horribly wrong with that list from my point of view. It seems to be a list (at least the top part) of the most BORING cities in the world. I think Id die of boredom inside a month if I had to live in Zurich.. or Frankfurt... ever been to Frankfurt? theres nothing there except sodding banks... and none of it's original. All faux built since 1945, as the USAF and RAF didnt leave one brick or stone on top of another during WW2. Nightlife? please...fergedahbahdit

so where are my favourites? Damn! Barcelona , Madrid and New York are right down the bottom at 44.45.46

Milan and Lisbon right at the bottom!! You cannot be serious!!!

So... given the choice of living where I do in London and coping with dog crap and chewing gum, or Zurich and the litter Gestapo - I think I'll stick with London

San Diego, California, probably has more peakoil.com posters than any other city anywhere. I have no idea why, just something I noticed. And I'd rather be here than in Lithuania or Belgium.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'M')ercer’s study is based on detailed assessments and evaluations of 39 key quality of living determinants, grouped in the following categories:

* Political and social environment (political stability, crime, law enforcement, etc.)
* Economic environment (currency exchange regulations, banking services, etc.)
* Socio-cultural environment (censorship, limitations on personal freedom, etc.)
* Medical and health considerations (medical supplies and services, infectious diseases, sewage, waste disposal, air pollution, etc.)
* Schools and education (standard and availability of schools, etc.)
* Public services and transportation (electricity, water, public transport, traffic congestion, etc.)
* Recreation (restaurants, theatres, cinemas, sports and leisure, etc.)
* Consumer goods (availability of food/daily consumption items, cars, etc.)
* Housing (housing, household appliances, furniture, maintenance services, etc.)
* Natural environment (climate, record of natural disasters)

This explains it. It's basically a political swipe at the US. Has nothing to do with how the people in a given city like it. . Half of these are weighted heavily toward european preferences for things like: public health care, education, street crime, the current attitude toward political dissent, and environmental issues. If you do not worry about that stuff, it completely changes the index.

Also, setting the index with New York being 100? Europeans typically think of NY as the prototypical American city, which is obviously silly.
