People need to be afraid

Unread postby uNkNowN ElEmEnt » Thu 13 Apr 2006, 15:35:44

I am playing with the idea that people need to be afraid. Just like some people need to put others down to elevate themselves, they need "something" to fear.

By having a stated fear (something their minds can justify), they can use that to focus on and control the other fears they can't control (or in some cases even identify).

They would use or even create a fear (for example) of pagans, or spiders that they can express. This allows them to identify or redirect their other fears onto this one thing or often group of people.

Instead of being afraid of "the man" or their government being out of control they will re-direct that onto their wife, the neighbours dog, or the bobcat they are sure is stalking their property (and is probably a skunk).

Any thoughts?

Sounds plausible. I certainly find peak oil a fascinating hobby.

People think too small to think far enough into the future to worry about peak oil. The system needs to be shocked. We need gas lines at every station and a president begging people to drive less.

Mods are the scariest things on Earth. I'd rather fight a PO zombie than a PO mod post PO.

PO is a religion. The PO mods are the priests.

Some of them have shown here that the step from modureiting a web forum and running a place like Bergen Belsen would be a very small step.

That is way over the line of decency buddy. You are comparing us to concentration camp killers? I think that is mod bashing in the extreme.

Are you still pissed that your request to be a mod was turned down?

I never requested it, but I'm fusion going on whatever comes after that and I've never even been winked at. Must be that damned Saddam Hussein thread, or maybe it was the time I said Monty should let 'er rip when insulting people and use mofo for effect.

I've never had trouble from the mods either, and I disagree with most of them, some strenuously.

At least now I feel winked at, sort of. Something I noticed when going back to look in the huge archive of past conversations is that so many of the names are still the same. I've noticed that certain people don't post anymore. Lokutus seems to have come and gone, along with many others, but the core folks stick around. I talked on the phone with gg3 once and he seemed like an earnest guy with good intentions to organize for the peak, etc. I must have seemed like an old cynic to him, I figure it's the masses that count, in the meantime all we can do is wait. You, ludi, can write nice poetry. I saw you do it once, about a lemur in a tree or something. Nice. You should do that again!

Specop shouldn't fear me. He has lots of guns, and we would probably end up on the same side in a civil war against the government.

If he just fears my ideas, then I don't blame him. Heck, I'm afraid of them.

Back to the topic, I really think that peak oil has to hit home and cause a bit of suffering to make people really take a hard stance on it. Nothing like a little suffering to jolt people into action. Lately, people have been taking on huge debts, but they still have their mccars and mcmansions.

I think fear is the great motivator; fear of going hungry, of not being attractive to the opposite sex (or a whip weilding mod if that is what blows yer skirt up), fear of failure, whatever.

Fear is healthy, without fear you get self-indulged, fat, couch potato consumeaholics who not only have their head in the sand; they don't even know the sand exists.

Personally I think the US at least could use a little dose of genuine (not politically motivated) reality/fear.

This is for you PMS;

For schwein, I’m not sure that post PO the mods won’t BE the zombies.

And Ludi, when did you ever disagree with anyone? :)
The legitimate object of government, is to do for a community of people, whatever they need to have done, but can not do, at all, or can not, so well do, for themselves -- in their separate, and individual capacities.

1. SPG asked me if I wanted to be a mod. This was during the survivalist thread incident here at PO.com. I actually think she had a crush on me or something because I was so convincing discussing this survival stuff.

2. I said OK.

3. I was turned down by the rest of the modureiter community because I'm too "controversial".

Simple as that! I never "requested" to be a mod.

If I ever become a mod I'll hunt down the PO-zombie nuts. I think that connecting PO to some kind of apocalyptic world full of living dead is far more damaging to the PO.com image than any 9/11 thread.
