CNN's most read stories at this moment.

1) Tanzanian volcano erupts
2) Dog decapitations shock Michigan town
3) 'I did not have HIV,' Zuma tells rape trial
4) Julia Roberts' show has amazing week
5) Webcast singer snapped up by Sony

Our whole civilization could probably collapse while the world is fretting about Priscilla Presley's new hairdo.

This almost makes me want to join the doomer camp. In the face of such ignorance a die-off is fully justifiable.

Am I the only one bothered by the newscasters who are smiling and making jokes mere minutes after telling stories where people are suffering and dying?

Oh, but I love how they make forced banter between themselves on-air!

It's like their your local in-town friends/gossips. No, no, it doesn't seem stretched at all...

You know the saying "If it bleeds, it leads"? Well, that minister's wife who killed her husband just bought Anderson Cooper a brand new SUV. Of course they are all smiling.

But the real question is "Who's more cynical, them for smiling at others' misfortune, or us for realizing they are so cynical, yet continuing to watch?"

This old song fits, from Don Henley, Dirty Laundry:

I make my living off the evening news
Just give me something-something I can use
People love it when you lose,
They love dirty laundry

Well, I coulda been an actor, but I wound up here
I just have to look good, I don’t have to be clear
Come and whisper in my ear
Give us dirty laundry

Kick ’em when they’re up
Kick ’em when they’re down
Kick ’em when they’re up
Kick ’em when they’re down
Kick ’em when they’re up
Kick ’em when they’re down
Kick ’em when they’re up
Kick ’em all around

We got the bubble-headed-bleach-blonde who
Comes on at five
She can tell you ’bout the plane crash with a gleam
In her eye
It’s interesting when people die-
Give us dirty laundry

Can we film the operation?
Is the head dead yet?
You know, the boys in the newsroom got a
Running bet
Get the widow on the set!
We need dirty laundry

You don’t really need to find out what’s going on
You don’t really want to know just how far it’s gone
Just leave well enough alone
Eat your dirty laundry

Kick ’em when they’re up
Kick ’em when they’re down
Kick ’em when they’re up
Kick ’em when they’re down

Kick ’em when they’re up
Kick ’em when they’re down
Kick ’em when they’re stiff
Kick ’em all around

Dirty little secrets
Dirty little lies
We got our dirty little fingers in everybody’s pie
We love to cut you down to size
We love dirty laundry

We can do the innuendo
We can dance and sing
When it’s said and done we haven’t told you a thing
We all know that crap is king
Give us dirty laundry!

Something that bothered me more was a couple of years ago a particular TV channel in New Zealand ran a advertising promo after their news programme. It showed the latest bloody shooting/war/natural disaster lots of dead, said something like when such and such disaster happened we brought you the news first. They were boasting about it. I thought it was sick.

Also another channel was reporting on a murder case that had happened in the Marlborough Sounds, they fronted the reporting with a moody shots of water, and gave it a title "The Sounds Murders", like it was the latest Miss Marple who-dunnit. I thought that was sick too.

Almost all of the media and journalist are sick f*ckers and exploiting parasites who, just like the religions, profiteer from human suffering like hyenas.

But why do they exist? Because "we" ask for their product. Once again, the enemy is us.

And it always has been like that, just read Karl Kraus (lived around WW1 and fiercely attacked hypocritical journalists throughout his whole live):

"The secret of the demagogue is to make himself as stupid as his audience so that they believe they are as clever as he."

"How is the world ruled and how do wars start? Diplomats tell lies to journalists and then believe what they read."

"When someone behaves like a beast, he says: 'After all, one is only human.' But when he is treated like a beast, he says, 'After all, one is human.'"

"To me all men are equal: there are jackasses everywhere, and I have the same contempt for them all."
"Democracy means the opportunity to be everyone's slave."

And this guy never married? How could the ladies possibly resist such a charming individual?

In all fairness though, I've often found myself thinking the exact same thing.

Hey, he did say "all men"... and he wasn't gay. And even if he was, gay marriage wasn't an option then...

Seriously though, he was immortally in love with Sidonie Nadherny all his later life, and when he asked her to marry him she said no...sigh, we all know the feeling, right? No wonder he was so grumpy...

Reminds me of the time when watching a local LA TV news broadcast after a major earthquake there. People were asked to call in and report what they saw. One guy calls in and says "Howard Stern, baba booie, Howard Stern, baba booie." Both of the reporters were speechless until they were told to go to the next caller.
