Movie: "Oil Crash" from Basil Gelpke & Ray McCormack

Unread postby Cynus » Thu 16 Mar 2006, 17:04:24

I figured I'd start a thread for reviews of "Oil Crash." Salon has one up, they said it was the best film they saw at the Austin Film Festival. Here's a bit:
"As I said above, the best movie I saw at SXSW this year was "OilCrash," a terrific work of investigative journalism-as-film that will scare the living crap out of you. Sure, you've read a little about the "peak oil" hypothesis, you disapprove in some theoretical way of the planet's massive (and rapidly worsening) fossil-fuel addiction, you're in favor of alternative energy sources and all that. You may even have the sense that things will get fairly bumpy as we try to develop cheaper solar power or new hydrogen technologies or whatever. Am I right so far? Well, Basil Gelpke and Ray McCormack's film paints a vastly grimmer picture than that... "

I hope the mods allow this thread to stay here, but I have feeling it will be teleported to the Books/Media Review forum soon.

I saw "Oil Crash" this afternoon at the Alamo Drafthouse Theater in Austin.

If you liked the "End of Suburbia" (EOS), you will appreciate this film as well. In some ways, the movies are structured the same, interviews with Colin Campbell, Matt Savinar, Roscoe Bartlett, Matt Simmons, and many others, but the movie did not "flow" as well as EOS. One of the co-producers mentioned in the short discussion afterwards, that the film is going to be edited again, so the final release of the film may still be a couple of months from now.
It was interesting to see some of the archival footage of M.K. Hubbert himself holding up a graph that looked quite similar to what one sees at dieoff.org or hubbertpeak.com : the small blip of a peak of the fossil fuel era of human existence.
There is no good news from the film and no viable solutions to the PO problem were offered. There aren't any unless the world population gets radically reduced, and that's not a good solution, but it may be the only one we have.

I wish they would have featured Matt Savinar a little more. His remarks had more wit and good sarcasm that the other interviewees (sic?) which got more audible response from the audience, and I think the audience could relate to his statements a little better.

Overall, the film is pretty good, but imo, it was still not as good as EOS.
Perhaps after the final editing, the facts presented will improve the overall film.

FREE Screening of "Oil Crash" Documentary - May 3r

Unread postby OilyMon » Fri 21 Apr 2006, 21:12:55

For anybody in the GTA - if you can make it into the city (probably best not to drive!) there's an absolutely free screening of "Oil Crash" - a documentary on for lack of a better word Peak Oil.

Watch a trailer here:

http://www.oilcrashmovie.com/

It looks like it's a good film, it cost's nothing to get in and it has been advertised as:

"The best independent horror movie this year.
OilCrash packs an emotional and informative punch
that may just be the most important film of the decade."
Tom Cappello, turnerclassicmovies.com

The only downside is that it's showing @ 11:45 PM, which may be a little late at it's a Wednesday. I hope to see some of you there.

Edit: It's showing at the Bloor Cinemas - which I assume you'll be able to find on your own if you're reading this!

Looks really good. I'm not sure if you saw it on the website, but there's also a screening at 9:15pm on April 30th. It looks to me like both the April 30th and May screening will cost $8.

I'm going to go to the April 30th screening, provided I'm not still drunk from celebrating the end of law school exams on the 27th!

Here it is! Wednesday May 3rd, 11:45 PM Bloor Cinemas - Free Screening

http://www.hotdocs.ca/festival_freescreen.cfm

I think though that if they are accepting donations this is the kind of production that should recieve a little support... if it really matters.
