The Acronym Thread

Unread postby Aaron » Thu 23 Feb 2006, 20:20:01

I thought it might be useful to collect common PO.com abbreviations & acronyms for folks not familiar with their meaning.

So let's see if we can build a reference guide for acronyms.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'a')c·ro·nym (ăk'rə-nĭm')
n.
A word formed from the initial letters of a name, such as WAC for Women's Army Corps, or by combining initial letters or parts of a series of words, such as radar for radio detecting and ranging.

TEOTWAWKI - The End of the World as we Know it.

RAOTFLMAO - Rolling Around on the Floor Laughing my ass off.

POTUS - President of the United States

LOL - Laughing out loud.

EROEI - Energy Returned On Energy Invested

IMHO - In my honest opinion.

WDIHWIP - Why does it hurt when I pee?
The problem is, of course, that not only is economics bankrupt, but it has always been nothing more than politics in disguise... economics is a form of brain damage.

Granted it is not obvious, Grand Old Party, which is another name for the Republican Party which is ironic given that the Democrat Party was formed prior.

The original founders despised the idea of political parties and we can easily now see why.

TLA - three letter acronym

so presumably you could have:

AWFL - acronym with four letters

AWMLTYCSASSA - acronym with more letters than you could shake a shitty stick at

Acronyms are very popular on high school campuses. Here's one from the room in which I'm watching over the kids right now (they're fine - low key):
DIVERSITY - Different Individuals Valuing Each other Regardless of Skin, Intellect, Talents, or Years. Pretty typical. I see them everywhere.

I was kinda hoping for useful acronyms related to PO...

like ANWR for example

or UAE

... but I didn't wanna just list em all myself and steal everyone's thunder.

It all boils down to whether TEOTWAWKI take place as:

TSHTF – The Shit Hits the Fan, otherwise known as Overnight Armageddon.

Or

TLSSS – The Long Slippery Shit Slide, the Long Emergency if you prefer.

I don’t think there is one for The Energy Fairy Pulls a Miracle Out of Her Butt; I guess it isn't discussed very often.
The legitimate object of government, is to do for a community of people, whatever they need to have done, but can not do, at all, or can not, so well do, for themselves -- in their separate, and individual capacities.
