So today while at work I recieved a call from a salesman that has been trying to get us to buy their model. Anyways I get these fairly regularly from various companies and usually they are short and simple. This one was a little different. The guy didn't want to push his product at all.(I've already removed it from the running. Fine product but not applicable to this situation) He wanted to know if I would be interested in working at their company.

THis is a big company, far far larger then the 7 person company I used to work at and the 20 person company I currently work at. It's a market leader and well known. About all I know about it financially is that it comes up fairly regularly on "mad money" and cramer is refusing to answer questions on it he's been trashing it so badly latley.

Anyways this was just a call for resume's with me being the only one they are calling for. Potentially something can come of this in the near term future (within a year I'd guess)

Now my situation is I love my job and it pays decently enough for the area. I love the area I live in as well since my entire family is here. I have been thinking about moving to a different house(more sun, more rooms) though so a move isn't out of the question. My soon to be wife currently lives and works in a different city (100km away) and we see each other on weekends mostly. She is with the federal government and can find work elsewhere easily enough but can't find anything where I live yet.

My job isn't exactly stable though. Programmer for the forest industry.... and I don't know where we'll be long term. I don't even know where we'll be in a year from now. I could grab a federal job fairly easily and that would make the wife to be much happier stability wise.

Anyways I have no intention of leaving the current job until the current project is finished and working well. Being the only guy on the project I really don't want to screw the boss over or anything. But in the end I need to think long term.

So I made the conversation with the guy short since I am at work and sitting in the same office as my boss couldn't really make it long anyways, but I'm going to give the guy a call one evening here. I'll also need to talk things over with the GF. I'm wondering what everyone else would do?

Well, it's a year off...forget it...you can submit a resume' and they'll calll you etc.

Anyways I talked with the guy tonight. I'm going to go through the motions mostly to see if I can get it and what they will offer. It's really hard to guage what going price for me is these days. The job involves crap loads of travel which I'm not that interested in. I can't imagine flying from westcoast to east coast weekly will be something we'll be doing a few years from now so stable it isn't although most won't see it that way right now.

I think I'm going to see if I can land a nice stable pointless government job. I'm marrying an inside person so my odds aren't too bad.

you are canadian so the rules might be a little different.

If you were American I would tell you the following 3 things:

a. There is no such thing as a stable job. You are always one buyout or merger away from unemployment.
b. There is no such thing as a loyal boss. Because of (a) above anyone is subject to being fired at any time except in rare cases of small companies (like yours) where the boss is the owner of the company. Even at that, if something happens to his customers, or conditions change in his life, you are subject to being fired no matter what you are working on.
c. There is no such thing as an "opportunity for advancement". Due mainly to (a) and partly due to (b) do not wait around in a job waiting for the next big promotion because it is just as likely to go to someone outside, or someone's son-in-law or something.

So, if you are getting paid amply, and have an interesting assignment, hang in there. But, you have to ask yourself the question: what happens to you once your current project is finished? If the new opportunity looks interesting, and gives you more networking opportunity (sales, for example) you have to take a look at it. If they make you a real offer, get everything in writing.

At this point I would stay with the small company. A job with lots of travel won't be economical for the company within the next 2 years, and they may lay you off. Forestry is far from the worst industry over the next few years, and if you are doing a lot of things that only you can do, you are seen as a big asset to the company.
