Enviromission's dream is dreamed out ...

Unread postby Jonathan_Hoag » Fri 17 Feb 2006, 16:06:13

Enviromission planned to build a "solar tower", a solar thermal power plant with a 1000 m (3333 ft) concrete tower surrounded by a huge greenhouse. It was supposed to generate 200 MW of electricity.

Alas, the dream is over. Strapped for cash, and begging the Australian government for additional funds, Enviromission decided to downsize the tower to 400 m (1333 ft) without much fanfare. Since the tower performance is very dependent on the tower, the plant won't generate nearly as much power as it was supposed to. The article does not give that information however.
The most important part of the article (imho):
The company recently scaled back its plans for the solar tower, which will now be about 400 metres high. Yesterday it announced plans to partner with Baulderstone Hornibrook to "provide project design" and to "support the project's business case".
The tower will cost an estimated $250 million to build, as opposed to the original $1 billion for the larger edifice.

I think this is just the beginning of the end. I don't think even the 400 m version will be built.

That's too bad. I have been following their progress since the beginning and had kept my fingers crossed. It seemed very promising.

I too have known about the project for a long time, partly because I am from Germany originally and the engineering comany that works on the project is German.

Yet, I knew the project was crap from the beginning. :)
