Geology and a Cool Professor

Unread postby PenultimateManStanding » Mon 13 Feb 2006, 18:11:58

I studied geology at UCSC in the 70s. There was a professor there at that time named Otmar Tobisch who had a bad stuttering problem. Only in hindsight do I realize his courage. I have my own affliction but there is a tendency of denial that works on people with handicaps, specially when they are young. I was out in the White Mountains of eastern California doing my senior project of mapping ancient metamorphic sedimentary rocks and he was with me to supervise. I did uncover details which didn't appear on the official maps but so what. The thing which sticks in my memory is that we saw a jet flying high overhead and he said what a waste of energy as we were sitting having lunch. My thought at the time was dismissive. Only now do I know he was right. But once again, so what? It was bound to happen that humanity would fuck up.

My favourite teacher from High School was called Mr Garnett, who taught geography. The thing I liked was he was a good teacher but also was prepared to go off on interesting tangents.

Good teachers, a very solid subject. My favorite was when I was going to the local Community College and took a course in logic. The influence on young impressionable minds is profound. Much of the ideological neuroses in this day and age is due, however, to demented teachers.
