What's going on, smallpoxgirl? Any insights as to why our medical system is imploding?

The only thing you should be gagging on it Brazilian nipples and your morning Metimucel.

I can tell you why it is because people do not make enough cash as Primary Care Doctors. It is capitalism, that is all nothing more.

Med students don't like the idea of busting their ass for 150K a year job with high stress. So they go into sub-specialties that pay a whole lot better, friggin radiologist sit around and look at x-rays and get paid 279k for doin it.

Go the extra mile while in med-school and you could be an ophthalmologist who presses a button on a laser and make 1000 every time you do it.

Or become an Orthopedic surgeon and make well north of 300k.

There is real trouble too in fields like OB. Some soccer mom's babby dies (shit happens) and it ends up being a payday for some cheap sleaze stack attorney. The State of Oklahoma has nearly run off all there OB's because their malpractices insurance has gotten so high.

There are lots of Doctors out there but they are highly specialized, it has been one of the benifits of our modern age.

Jeez, sorry Carrie, looks like I stole your thread! It was just a chance at payback to settle an old score with NevadaGhost. He accused me of being a pointy-headed intellekshual. It went something like this: will all pointy-heads please stand up. (a play on my user name) Please post all references to the doctor shortage in Carrie's thread, thank you! :)

And don't forget, they backdoor draft the old doctors... when you retire you have to keep your malpractice up for some period of time (10 years here I think). Lots of docs put off retirement long after they want to stop working because it would ruin them financially.

Well, now there's just two since NG's thred was deleted as per his request. Q: if a doctor keeps working for ten more years, why wouldn't he/she still have the same problem of being liable for malpractice and still have to keep working until they die to make the insurance payments? Then wouldn't their children be liable?

The price of entrance isn't cheap.

A girl/friend of mine is currently attending school to become a Podiatrist. She already has a 4yr bachelor degree (biology major) from UW school and still has many years ahead of her. Thankfully her parents are very supportive and i think pay for most if not all of it. She did make the comment around Christmas that a lot of students were dropping out lately.

He/She would, they have to work longer to save the money to pay the insurance which is an added cost of retirement for them unlike most other professions. I see this as adding to the problem as people who do not want to be doing what they are doing tend to be less competent.

I would imagine so if they had a stake in the estate. My entire extended family was sued for over 20 years. Estate almost entirely went to the slimy lawyers. I think the original litigator got little to nothing and was out of it in a matter of years.

Does it all really matter if the health care system implodes are not with peak oil upon us anyway? High tech medicine is a product of the oil age and its going away. There won't be any high tech doctors in the stone age.

Thats gonna be one of the least of our worries. Do you think any of us average Joes are gonna be able to aford to see a doctor when nobody has jobs?

Anyway, its all just another sign that the western world is about to fall to pieces.

AE has a point, if modern medicine goes away we will go back to Incence, herbs, needles, chimes and chants. That should give the lawyers easy pickins going after the alternative healers and herbalists in court.

WARNING TO MEN: I think most PPO plans and spouses might universally reject medical claims for brazillian nipple thearpy to treat your migraines or carpal tunnel syndrome.

I see it as a result of the new world feeding frenzy. Everyones wants and desires are crushing everything around them. Now when someone truly NEEDS things its not going to be there. Its like using our dwindling stocks of oil to produce box stores full of pure shit. now when we NEED that oil to produce NEEDS and utilitarian products it wont be there. thus an insane loony situation we find oursleves in. more cash from increaisng taxes will be thrown into more programs. the death spiral has only just begun.
irresponsibility and abuse.
Its like the environment. ruin it then turn around and spend billions and billions to restore it. weirdo sicko dysfunction in this mentality. this carries over to many aspects of the culture.
and environment has been setup where the stupid and weak have a decided edge in outcompeting the strong, responsible and intelligent.
carte blanche.
the sick, greedy and stupid can not run a country in perpetuity.

Yeah, more and more I'm of the opinion our society is gonna get what it deserves.

No the children born today do not deserve what they are getting and that is the sad part to me. The parents that consumed all the resources deserve to go down with the ship though.

We have pissed away the oil for things like driving to the mall and shopping. So now we won't even have it available to help feed our huge population with. It disgusts me to see more big box stores and malls being built.

I think so, and all their belongings and if they marry, the mother in law is liable, but if everyone dies, then the closest living relative must pay the award until a first clone appears, whereupon the clone on reaching maturity must supply children to be slaves for the lawyers for at least 312 years.

Unless of course they become lawyers, then professional courtesy will allow a class action suit against the american medical association for 27 fortnights, unless someone dies in the library trying to research the topic, wherupon the Librarian is responsible and the government must settl, through intermediary which can only be Ted Kennedy or one of his direct employers.

Now... how did THAT clause get in there???

ha ha! freaking lawyers. I moonlight as a delivery driver and once a lawyer threatened to sue me and the girl on the phone who took the order and the owner of the restaraunt because his food was late. What a churlish creep. I pissed him off because he said he wouldn't pay for the food. I said I had to call the restaraunt and at first he wouldn't get a phone but just bad-mouthed me instead. I talked him in to getting a phone. So he hands me the phone and starts bad-mouthing me some more. So I asked him, real polite-like, to take the phone back "for a second". He looked puzzled but took the phone. Then I turned around and walked back to my car without saying a word (taking the delicious food with me). He followed me and screamed "you're lucky to have a fucking job! blah blah blah" He tried to get me fired. I'm still working there and he hasn't called back or sued. Lawyers.
