That episode of South Park featuring SARS was pretty hilarious. However, you must remeber that a disease with even a 2-5% mortality which can easily transmit human to human will still sicken billions and kill millions.

Nothing particularly to worry about right now. Just keep your ear to the ground, keep up with the news, and take note if the virus mutates to H2H. Then we will have something to worry about. Otherwise, no, unless you're a chicken farmer....

BBC World Service reported today that tests show that the virus has undergone a slight mutation - though still not able to spread human to human, the change could make that jump a little easier. But the WHO insists it is still an Animal Welfare issue and there must be no panic since there are no signs of human to human infection.

Don't ask me to name the programme, but it was either between 7:00am--8:00am (US) central time or between 5:15pm--6:15pm (US) central time.

Okay: just an update on my previous post; the mutation I mentioned has been seen before - it does NOT make the virus easier to transmit human to human, it makes it easier to transmit bird to human (which is bad enough if you happen to be the human, or the bird!) but is not, it appears, the precursor to a pandemic.

The following is my opinion ansd should not be taken above the advice of the world health organization because they are the ultimate authority, but I'll still wear a paper mask made for influenza fomite filtering anyway so there.

When a virus hits and spreads, it spreads BEFORE the signs hit, I mean that it is passed from people whom we do not realize are sick. It is passed by FOMITES.

That is little particles of spit.

If you are in a sunny room and even breath hard, you sill see a fine mist that sort of floats along, this fluid is what transmits the virus.

It is lung fluid.

One fomite can give you the flu. YOU CAN't get the HUMAN BIRD FLU YET it doesn't exist YET but it may.

The virus has not learned to grow in humans in a way to be transmitted, but it will.

When it does we will hear about it in the news. If it hits the USA and it appears in two DIFFERENT SCITIES on the same day, then we know an airport was involved and anywhere or anyone from an airport is to be shunned.

That is the day I will start wearing a small paper mask.

Fomites do not pass through paper easily, the paper absorbs the water droplet into the paper mask.

In the 1918 world series all the baseball players wore paper masks, and they survived. The local mational guard all wore paper masks, and all the schools were let out.

Jan. 14 (Bloomberg) -- The current wave of lethal bird flu in Turkey that has infected at least 18 people began in mid November, more than three weeks before an initial report, the World Organization for Animal Health said.

Outbreaks of the H5N1 avian influenza virus affected birds as early as Nov. 21, Huseyin Sungur, a government veterinary official, said in a Jan. 12 report to the Paris-based organization. The highest point predicted for this pandemic (based on death toll and virulence) is 10% of the worl'ds polulation dying. I doubt that will happen, but even 1% of todays population is 100s of millions - no laughing matter.

Been home three days now with flu.
Made me think about how easily it spreads. I got it from somewhere, yet I don't seem to have any colleague or friend who has it. Neither did I do any shopping the last week or two.
So I probably picked it up at the gas station.

When avian goes airborn it is really a matter of not going near a single human being for weeks....or even months.

Well the positive side is that I could spend more time spamming my valuable thoughts and ideas to this eminent site.
