Peak Oil's Celebrity Spokesperson

When I look at the photos in the "Ask the Experts" forum, what do I see?

Old, creepy looking, foreigner, nerd, dweeb, pasty.

Most of them are middle-aged, fairly wealthy white men who speak to middle-aged, fairly wealthy white men. The movement could really use help when it comes to attracting the young people. Just look at the previous age poll.

I nominate Jack White of the White Stripes.

Why?
1)The Big Three Killed My Baby
Listen to the song. It's on their first album; really angry.

2) He has a disdain for modern technology, especially cars.

"I just can't stand cars. I think they are the worst money pits and killing machines of all time. Every car I've ever had has broken down, like, every week (points to 2 rings and bracelet). These are hose clamps from a car engine. I wear them as a symbol. I wanted to organize an anti-automotive festival in Detroit, but it never came together. It's such a farce. The companies are so tied in with the oil companies. For God's sake, we have wars over the oil to put gas in our cars".
The Stripes have shunned digital recording of their music. They work out of Toe Rag Studios in London. None of the studio's equipment dates after the 1960's.

3) He is not Ed Begley Jr.

4) HE IS NOT ED BEGLEY JR.

What do you think? Maybe someone should send him a free copy of "End of Suburbia".

Oh, he also worked as an upholsterer before he became a professional musician. Therefore, he'd be pretty useful even after the electricity is gone.

I'm young and came here. But if you think about it, who has the most to lose from PO? That's right, my generation. And personally, I don't think we'll be too pleased the generation before us messed up their chance to avoid this. But it is and interesting idea, and definitely worth a shot. I'm sure if we sent enough punk bands the end of suburbia, someone would consider it. Actually, I've noticed that most people that listen to punk rock tend to be more politically active than most youth and believe non-mainstream things much more easily.
In the long run, men hit only what they aim at. Therefore, though they should fail immediately, they had better aim at something high.-Thoreau

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'W')hat do you think? Maybe someone should send him a free copy of "End of Suburbia".

As crazy as it sounds, it's one of the best and most creative strategies I have heard of when it comes to spreading the word quickly. It's a long shot, but it could work.

I've wondered about 'flashmobing' as another creative possibility, but this requires a decent awareness to begin with... Top marks for creative thinking...

I agree. Problem with punk rockers, though, is that no one wantsx to listen to us. Not with all the spikes and Bad Religion T-shirts/patches all over the place (Or the stop-Bush shirts on Conan O'brien ). However, a quick perusal of the punk activism scene shows, punks don't want to think about peak oil (trust me I've told plenty). It apparently is easier to blame our problems on Bush.

I found LATOC, through a link I found on punkvoter.com, and was thus introduced to the "wonderful world of peak oil" . Yet never once on any of the many Punker sites that deal with political issues, have I ever heard mention of peak oil. This leads me to believe that:

1) These various punk groups are informed of this issue
2) They don't care or;
3) They have chosen to ignore it (Which I suppose is pretty much the same as 2)

Let me just say this: I LOVE PUNK ROCK!!
But the "Punk Movement" of late seems to have lost direction. It has joined the forces of the "Anyone but Bush" squad, which to me seems like an ultimately misguided movement.

A closer inspection of your "choices" in the coming election, if you want to call them that, should reveal that it's really no choice at all. At least it seems that way to me.

Thus "Anybody but bush" is foolishness. For gods sake we're supposed to be fuckin' punks! Why are we rallying behind everyone else in a meaningless cause! Bah!
It seems waaaaay to fashionable these days to yell "Down with Bush!"
Bush is just the fall guy. I'm not sure what for yet, but I'm pretty sure it's true. He's just the idiot who's there to take the blame for something, honestly I'm starting to feel sorry for this guy.

"Really Pa? I gets to be president?"

"That's right George, you can be the most powerful man in the world  Honest."

"Will I get to fight the evil doers, pa?"

"Uuuuuuh Yeah go with that, that should do JUST fine. Might I suggest Saddam?"

LOL. I suppose that's not QUITE how it would work, but pretty close.

A long haired rocker that wears a hose clamp for a bracelet as a spokesperson??
Expletive deleted man, can we get the TeleTubbies onboard too? Maybe The Wiggles will join in as well.

Your right Specop_007. In order to be a real man, you need a cabinet full of guns.
