Cuteness of Butterstick Baffles Even Scientists

According to the article, the factors of cuteness are ever evolving, and based on the traits cited, it would seem that the Stick is one of those forces pushing the adorability envelope:

Scientists who study the evolution of visual signaling have identified a wide and still expanding assortment of features and behaviors that make something look cute: bright forward-facing eyes set low on a big round face, a pair of big round ears, floppy limbs and a side-to-side, teeter-totter gait, among many others...

The Panda's cuteness is at least real. As for the insanely priced Keane paintings, if ever there was a reason to open up a can of Manzoni's Merde d'Artiste. . .

There's not a single image here that I would find 'cute'. In fact they are bizarre; morphological bastardazations of human/animal releif. They creep me out. I wouldn't give a dime for a truckload...

Yes, of course, I agree. But The World sez otherwise: $8750 for the one of the boy with the red shirt and the black cat. What else could people be thinking than, "aw, so cuuute"? The lady made it big time with this stuff. Now these eyeball pics - whoa! Those are cult-pictures I think. Probably satanic in nature. Hanging at the core of the pentagram. Very curious, too, that Ms. Keane likes early Picasso's and plagiarizes such work.

You have to wonder if cuteness, a wide assortment of traits that cross species barriers, confers some kind of survival advantage. Would a predator, a wolf for example, stop short of attacking Butterstick in the wild because he's just too cute? And if not a male wolf, perhaps a female wolf? It sure works on humans.

As for the big eye paintings they are about as cute as Strieber's aliens. Yuk. Neotony carried to creepy extremes.

Because it's a corgi. Like dachsunds and basset hounds, corgis have dwarfism of the legs.

I read somewhere that cuteness brings out the instincts and motivation necessary for parenting. Think about it: When you see something cute, you find yourself wanting to hold it, take care of it, and protect it, right?

Now, whether cuteness is meant to make someone care about something, or whether we are instinctually made to care about things that happen to be cute, can be debated. Probably a little of both.

This is very true. Imagine if babies weren't cute--would anyone want to have anything to do with them? Also, studies have shown that cuter babies get more attention from parents and relatives.

yep, it is a 7 week old corgi monster. I have never heard anyone call that picture screwy. It is funny how different we all see the world around us.

yep. puppies and kittens, cute as can be. So are little kids when they are learning to talk, to walk, etc. It's a mammal thing, I think. Little baby snakes aren't cute, are they? Baby spiders?

I just google-imaged 'baby spiders' and there she was, cute as a button. Most babies are cute. It's the natural order of things.
