$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Leanan', 'A')nd I wish people would look outside the U.S. and the extremely brief U.S. history. U.S. history until 1970 was on the upside of the resource curve. We "discovered" a whole continent full of rich resources, which was largely unexploited. Of course we did well. It would be pretty darn hard not to do well in that situation.
It's not freedom, democracy, the American spirit, the superiority of capitalism, or our "brilliant minds and determination" that is responsible for our success. It's those plentiful resources. We were born on the third base and thought we hit a triple.
I agree with you 200%. The main reason USA is now were it is, is because of all the untapped resources, the Native Indians "gladly" surrendered to us to exploit them. That, and the two big lakes separating America from everybody else, plus large amounts of freedom and democracy to act as salt and pepper.
ranger should read a little bit of world history to realize what happened to other smaller countries over the pond: they either had a good resource base 2000 years ago, that was easily exploited by Greeks, Romans, Turks, Russians, Austrians, Germans and other empires, or they were in the wrong place at the wrong time, and were viciously attacked by Goths, Visigoths, Tatars, or both.
One example: Romania, a small country in Eastern Europe, one of the richest provinces of the Roman Empire, baring tons of gold, silver, and with excellent agricultural land. Unfortunately, right in the middle of the action, so it was squeezed of all the riches long ago. When the Austrian aristocracy was partying and waltzing in Vienna, Romanians were fighting Turks and Tatars, acting as a firewall against barbarian’s invasion in Europe. Then came the World Wars and the Germans who took almost every drop of oil out of its soil. Then the Soviets who installed their puppet regime and finalized the "occupation", helped of course by a bunch of stupid Romanian leaders. For a brief period between the two great wars, Romania was one of the biggest oil and grain exporters in the world, second only to the USA. Check all the inventions Romanians made. The mind power of such a small country is impressive: a lot of big contributions in mathematics, aeronautics (I bet ranger doesn't know that the jet engine was invented by a Romanian), arts, and sports. Look at it now. I bet you cannot even find it on the map.
The example above could be applied to many countries in the entire world. ranger believes that America is the center of the world. Grow up man; Egyptians were raising pyramids long before there were even permanent settlements in US.
Every civilization has its time of glory, followed by decline. What makes you so sure US is exempt from that?
To sum up: being optimistic is definitely a good thing, but being “ranger” optimistic is plain stupidity and doesn’t help anybody.
Even if a miracle happens and we “make“ it past PO untouched, that’s not our problem. Our problem is a system based on growth and our economy based on interest, demanding more and more resources every year. If we don’t address the real problem we’ll face worse and worse peaks every 10 years. And to make the problem worse, due to globalization the outlook is even gloomier.
So there’s no reason to get happy that “we’re going to be fine” to quote ranger’s masterpiece. We have all the reasons in the world to get scared if fine means business as usual.
