Do you buy alot of food out of season?

Unread postby lyrl » Sat 17 Dec 2005, 16:07:30

A thread I was reading made some comment about people going to war over not having strawberries in December. I was just curious about how many people would be susceptable to that kind of tempation - how many buy strawberries in December now?

I know I'm fairly sensitive to the price of fresh vegetables, and won't buy things that cost more than $2-3 per pound - which excludes out-of-season perishable fruits like strawberries. And to some extent, availability is driven by the seasons now - fresh corn is only available in the summer in my grocery store, and ditto for fresh raspberries.

Even the cheaper things like lettuce I don't often eat out of season - who wants a cold salad when it's 20 degrees outside? Brr.

What do you guys think?

I try to keep an eye on where the things I buy come from. Unfortunately not all the fresh produce have any indication of where they originated in the supermarkets here in Australia. Where there is an indication I don't buy if they come from further than 2-400 km from Brisbane. Packaged goods, I try to buy Australian only. But sometimes I do buy 'exotic' goods for a treat or if there isn't local/Australian product. That means I don't eat strawberries (except jam) outside of August to October.

I agree. I'm the type who eats fresh stuff thats in season/or i'll eat frozen when its not (strawberries/veggies) and then for fruit, i usually eat apples/pears/ or cannned fruit (apples last a long time).

Strawberries are currently VERY expensive...from producenews.com

Cold temperatures in northern Mexico have greatly reduced the quantity of "Driscoll" berries crossing into Yuma. Overall tonnage from Oxnard will remain very light into mid- or late January. Current prices are terribly expensive, and the quality is average at best.

I've probably had one salad in the last 2 months.

We eat in season - or what we have preserved ourselves. I cannot remember the last fresh produce I bought at the store. If we don't grow it, we usually don't eat it fresh.

I did walk into my mom's kitchen today when I went for a visit, though, and found a fresh pineapple complete with the "product of Guatemala" tag on it. Geez.

We almost always buy locally grown fruit and vegetables and during the summer our own trees offer a nice crop. But you have no idea how difficult it is to find fresh locally grown durian in San Francisco in the winter so we do make a few exceptions.

Got to relish those exceptions while you can.

we also grow a lot of our own...but I cannot(!) grow celery, so we get it at the local farmers market. Nearby where I live there is a large organic farmers co-op, so we have a very nice local market.

We can and freeze, so we have fruits and veggie for the winter. But, I cannot resist a pineapple that is on sale at the grocery store, and I love bananas.
