$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('cube', 'R')oadways in general don't "pay for themselves" but they are still necessary. That explains why governments throughout history have paid for their upkeep.

Roadways are necessary. 10-lane freeways, however, probably aren't.

All I am saying (which is soooo far off the thread topic now) is that the wishes of the people aren't being considered when $270m bridges in Alaska are getting built for 50 people at a time. The people of America are, in fact, demanding better mass transit. Even in car-loving Texas, people have voted resoundingly in favor of rail transit in local referendums. Yet these people receive a pittance of the total federal budget because (obviously) the highway lobbyists yell louder. And what senator wouldn't want his name on a bridge?

I think we should treat transit just like we treat highways - as a necessary part of our transportation system. We already treat the insolvent airlines that way - note the billions in subsidies that they receive.

(Those blow-by-blow posts were getting too damn long... - 8) )

Not the idiots I live next to...rejected light rail a few years ago by wide margins. Gotta love those Texans and their grotesquely large PU trucks. :-D

Well I was speaking of Dallas and Austin, respectively.

What's wrong with a 10-lane freeway? How about a 12-20 lane freeway? Canada's 401

If there's a demand for it then why not? Freeways have gotten a bad image b/c people think traffic is a bad thing. Well there's another way to look at it. Having traffic on the freeways means there's people who have jobs to drive too and shoppers who have money to go somewhere. If a person wishes for traffic congestion to disappear then an economic depression would make the wish come true.

I'm trying to keep my posts short. [smilie=car16.gif]

Well that's one way to look at it. Next time I see a fat guy, I'll praise him for keeping the economy going by eating at McDonald's all the time. :P

I understand what you're saying: traffic is a sign that the economy is humming right along. But if you believe at all that PO is near, then you must realize that paradigm is in danger of being broken - permanently. And because that 'traffic' is more or less a direct result of high rates of homeownership (suburban dispersion) that won't be sustainable post-PO, those freeways will soon give way to more sustainable (relatively speaking), reasonable forms of transportation, like light rail/HSR.
