Fair Maiden, Well, at least your husband is paying attention. Kunstler is a very brilliant guy, but his word isn't the final word. The suburbs may not necessarily die, but be completely reconfigured for higher density, improved infrastructure, better bus service, etc....etc... There's no way of knowing exactly how this will play out in the long run. What if businesses find they want to be closer to their customer base and move out of the city into the suburbs where rent is cheaper?

I would caution you and your husband not to get completely bent out of shape. Prepare for the worst but understand that noone knows with 100% accuracy how events will play out in the future.

Thanks everyone for your kind words. I appreciate the responses and am going to let things die down for a while before we discuss any plans for preparation. I got some very useful advice - one of which we are already pursuing on a nightly basis 8)

We are definitely getting married - the comment about our wedding was just that I had wanted to elope (and save our money). If he had known about PO when we got engaged, he would have agreed with me. But who knows? This may be last chance for our entire families (on both sides) to fly out to be all together. We have ppl coming from all over the world.

I never questioned my choice in man - have no idea where that came from. I see no reason to call me a "bitch" either. A bitch would not seek unbias advice to make things easier for their partner. I agree, the End of Suburbia paints a very bleak and dark picture - something I should have been ready to counter.

BTW, we have lots in common. We operate a business together, participate in sports teams and volunteer together. Maybe he felt as tho I was "hiding" this part of myself bc my interest in PO has taken up alot of time. Time we would have normally spent discussing/working/playing together.

This site is awesome.

Thanks Fair, we really try. My wife and i are going to find a copy of The end of suburbia and watch it as soon as i can find one. I told her about this post and she said can it wait 6 months, I want to have the baby and be out of any post partum period before you load me with more depression. I figure it might take me that long just to find a copy, so i can wait for now. Besides, by then i figure alot more input will come in the form of gas prices and obvious oil production decline. I really think things will be alot different next year, which is why i'm really going to be saving as much money as i can during this time period.

What kind of volunteering do you do? And where do you live anyway, i'm going to be starting some local peak oil stuff. Maybe that's something you and your husband could do together. It might help alliviate his feeling of helplessness by actually accomplishing something to help mitigate the effects of peak oil in your locality.

Somedays, the 'loose cannon' coefficient is rather high. I suspect that a certain party may be feeling contrite, pending recognition of a certain offense.

Bit heavy handed there, I'd say, for an occasion where rendering empathy and compassion for suffering would have been the order of the day.

Azreal,

Here is where I found End of Suburbia: http://arkady.indymedia.org/media/video/

I volunteer to coach hockey, act in dinner theatre fundraisers, campaigns that advocate for sustainable communities (traffic calming, mixed use, etc), the civic committee for transportation and give free seminars on promoting walking/cycling/transit as an alternative to the car.

I'm in Canada - but starting something about PO is a great idea! There is a theatre across the street would air the film (obviously I'd contact the company and get permission) - I could charge just enough to cover costs and the end result would be "sign up to do more about PO in our community"!
