Interesting discovery at the bookstore this afternoon...

Unread postby jrob8503 » Wed 29 Sep 2004, 00:25:41

I got off the train from the city this afternoon and made the short walk over to the Borders. Much of what I know about peak oil has come off this site, so I thought I'd pick up one of the experts' books on it to learn some more. About a week and a half ago, the ecology shelf had approx. five or six books peak oil books on it. However, I didn't have my wallet on me at them, so I couldn't make a purchase. Much to my dismay, when I approached the shelf today, they were nearly all gone! The only one left was Paul Roberts' "End of Oil", which is in hardcover and the most expensive.

I doubt they would have put all those books on the reduced price section. They weren't moved to another section; at least according to the search kiosk.

Is it simply a coincidence? Or is public interest in the subject increasing?

Clearly oil industry operatives are snatching the books up to keep them out of the public's hands.

I took a look at Amazon and noticed two things.

First, there are lots more books on Peak Oil

Second, the sales rankings are getting fairly high

Last, a personal observation. A stockbroker friend of mine suggested I read "The Oil Factor" by Leeb. (Which I did, BTW - good book).

Bottom line, Peak Oil is beginning to penetrate the mass consciousness of the public.

I have noticed this phenomena as well.... peak oil books are missing from the shelves of stores... I think people are starting to seek out the information for themselves. HOORAY! :D

I just hope that if oil prices fall again, that people don't become complacent.

Since oil is up a mere 36.8% from one year ago, and the stock market is doing OK but not great....I'd say reasonably well.

Last spring I was in a Borders looking for Hienberg and couldn't find it. Upon asking, the clerk looked at me like I was a kook and said he can order it. I went to amazon instead. Anybody know where you can look up books sales?
You observed it from the start
Now you’re a million miles apart
As we bleed another nation
So you can watch you favorite station
Now you eyes pop out your sockets
Dirty hands and empty pockets
Who? You!
