My Fantasy

Unread postby PenultimateManStanding » Mon 24 Oct 2005, 20:38:17

With my headstrong and feminine wife, I break the virgin territory for farming. Hard work day after day brings the wilderness into the fold. The fertility of the land allows us, my wife and I, to raise ten kids, who all honor and respect my special blend of humor and sagacity. I grow old and see all of my kids get their special ones who give me many grandchildren. Life is as it should be and then I go to meet God.

That's the theme of about 5 thousand French Canadian novels (I'm French Canadian). If you don't read French, there's an excellent true story called 'Three Against the Wilderness' about a young fellow who did just that in the interior of British Columbia. There are also many such books written about similar challenges in various other parts of Canada, new settlers to Australia, South Africa, etc. For some reason these types of true tales or novels are more popular outside of the USA. In the USA there's more often a historical event attached like the Oregon Trail, Civil War, Gold Rush, etc. (more of a Jack London approach).

I haven't read any of those novels, but I saw a movie when I was a boy, Shenandoah with James Stewart along those lines. The tragedy was the the American Civil War ruined it for him. The real tragedy is that we are all born too late, and natural human happiness is only a dream.

"The real tragedy is that we are all born too late"

There's more places 'to get lost in' even than there were 50 years ago. Lots of folks still heading out into remote parts of Canada. Few of them last or they just want to do it for a couple years. With today's modern equipment, clothing, food, etc. it's easier than ever.

We weren't born too late as much as we have different expectations. Not so much fun hand washing diapers for 10 kids or trudging through the bush for 10 days with a toothache to reach a town with a dentist
