I feel better hanging out around here - maybe because it helps me feel like less of a crazy loon....or maybe I feel like a crazy loon who has friends....maybe I am a crazy loon! 8O

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'N')o. Most of the people here aren’t quite on the same wavelength as myself.

Ditto…except I am not on the same wavelength as Specop. I think I mostly fall in line with Aaron.

I remain extremely pessimistic regarding the future prosperity of the human race.

There are too many sheeple (soft landers) here on this site for me. I wish we could have a "doomer" section to talk about the darker side of things to come. Every time a doomer thread starts, it is made fun of by our resident sheeple. They are all distractions, just like Specops' threads (most of them). Very few members are willing to discuss how horrible life is about to become (horrible= dieoffs, lower standard of living, death, wars, disease, etc.) I for one have been laying low on this forum & (more) quietly making preparations.

I concur. I propose a Hardcore Doomer and Fuzzy Bunny forum to separate the wheat from the chaff. Aaron?

Sometimes I feel like a nut
Sometimes I don't
peakoil.com has nuts
mounds don't ... because ( j/k I always feel like a nut )

No, given what I have studied in history, if everything goes does down bad, there will be huge dieoffs, territory wars, wide spread famine.

I just don't think, this will be our immediate threat. I think we are headed for an immediate world wide recession possibly great depression but the sheeple will hold on as long as they have realty tv. Personally I feel the neocons will do whatever they can to keep the world together until they get out of office in 2008 and then they will hand it off to the democrats that way they can claim everything was fine while they were in.

That, good sir, is evident.

Myself, I do feel a bit more at peace of mind. With this forum, I am at least exercising my mind, and by posting on here, others may benefit from my thoughts.

As you can tell, I do like to help people.

Currently, my plan is to get out of home, start renting, and get some kind of backpack kit going (I can't drive, so I'll be getting out via the railways - fitting, no?).

It are precisely these kinds of comments that keeps me coming back to this forum. Personally, I think that many people posting here spend WAY to much time on the Internet, browsing controversial websites that discuss global issues and claim to be informative (but are not), and then come to peakoil.com to share their newly acquired 'knowledge', with the intention to inform their fellow peakoiler, so he\she can take the adequate measures necessary to plan for the future.

It amazes me that people on peakoil.com actually believe they belong to a community that has some kind of foreseeing `knowledge`, that is not available to the masses (or as some members label them, very disrespectfull, the `sheeple`), which gives us a huge advantage for future developments...

I get peace of mind from these forums in an indirect way.

These forums give me the knowledge to prepare and (more importantly) ACCEPT...and THAT'S what gives me the peace of mind.

It's just as well that we don't have such a section; the mass of people refuse to acknowledge that a problem exists. Even on this site, a great many appear to believe that post-Peak adaptation will consist of riding a bicycle or motoring along in a hybrid car.

When one actually gets into solid doomer scenarios, one faces the situation alluded to in a recent poll - i.e., two enter, only one leaves. Thus will it be - in my opinion - around the world. Except it will actually be more like 6 enter, 1 leaves.

From this, much follows. Mere cooperation will not suffice; cooperation may move the deck chairs around as the great ship begins to shudder and slip beneath dark waves, but it will not keep the passengers and crew alive. We have 6.5 billion passengers. We have, at most, lifeboat capacity for 1 billion of them. So one is faced with deciding who will have one of those precious seats, and who will not. People are simply not prepared to make that decision; though, in the fullness of time, they will be forced to make it.

My preparations continue apace. As for discussing the details; that seems superfluous. Persuading the ignorant masses is pointless. If people don't get it yet, I accept their self-nomination to the ranks of non-survivors.

I think you hit the nail there. Stress is caused by being worried about a problem but not being able to do anything about it. Even if you can't change the underlying problem significantly, at least sharing the knowledge with others, and preparing mentally as well as practically is a great benefit. So regardless of what the truth is these forums allow like minded people to connect, and I think that helps.

On the subject of what the "truth" really is: that is a big topic but is a side issue to how people feel. I think I would disagree on one point, it is possible to have special knowledge, in fact quite easy given the general condition of public ignorance (check out snopes.com to see how many things people believe that are not true, as well as regular surveys where people think the Sun orbits the Earth).

While there may not be much we can do about global matters, simple things like getting out of debt could make a huge difference to the individual. So I think there is a lot of positive stuff going on, but I think the difficulty for most people is spending an hour or so preparing for the worst, then switching off and enjoying life without worrying about what might not happen.
It's all downhill from here

Here, 'they' are crazy, I am sane.

There's nothing wrong with calling 'them' sheeple.

You ask about my mental state? I'm floored.

Initially I did get "peace of mind," because for the first time I discovered a significant pod of people who share my un-sheeple-like views about energy, the environment, politics, and society. That was refreshing, even exciting. However, with time I've found it difficult to establish good communication---much less anything approching a human connection---with these supposedly like-minded people. It's sort of like the feeling you get when you pour your guts out into a post and it gets totally ignored. Also, I've been disappointed by the fair amount of conventional thinking I've encountered (like specop's) alongside the good stuff (like microhydro's and killjoy's). And, sigh, a power-and-class structure and a set of laws (written or otherwise) have developed on the PO site, as they seemingly must in all avenues of human activity.

I'm sure I'm the one to blame for being a misfit here; I don't get along with people in the real world a whole lot better. A sense of "community" may be too much to ask of what is, after all, just a bunch of electrons whirling around. Now I'm questioning whether active participation in this site is worth my time. Participation is work, God wot, and I have enough of that already. Sometimes I even feel like I'm back in the office world, playing those nerve-wracking e-mail politics. Probably the lurkers have it right---read what's interesting and get out.

However, I haven't quite given up yet, because the alternative for me is 25 acres of lonely woods.

Good forum, by the way!

Peace of mind wouldn’t exactly be right because many times the news and analysis thereof aren’t serenity inducing by a long shot. However, the news posted here is a great resource and some of the analysis surpasses that of the canned MSM spin regurgitation by huge margins.

The simple fact that there are such a wide variety of views here is actually the best test of some of the news reported – and while that may not give me special knowledge, it does give me a unique way to parse that news.

Kudos to Dan for keeping this board open and impartial, it is surely the strongest asset here in deciphering the spin, opinion and outright lies.

However I do get some amount of satisfaction in trying to direct folks to resources for becoming just a little more independent of the gov.inc infrastructure. Early on there was some worry that the Planning forum would turn into the PO.com Drooling Survivalist Militia forum, or Happy PO Hippy forum but that seems not to be the case, perhaps to the disappointment of some. Again that can be possibly be attributed to the wide variety of views represented.

Actually, I didn’t start out to disagree with the idea of segregated Doom Dungeon and Utopia Nirvana forums, but having said all the above it strikes me that from the perspective of the lurker or someone newly initiated to the idea of PO, the mixing of ideas and debate of various scenarios is our most important function.

Good Day From Pheba From the Farm:
My mental state?
Oh goodness. How do I describe this.
I have Lupus. A person with lupus is suppossed to avoid stress.
I usually do a pretty good job of keeping lupus at bay, and staying cool.
That being said, I have what I can only describe as a constant low level hum in my subconscious. Even when I am not aware of peak oil, I am aware.
I try to remove it by living my life, enjoying myself, coping.
The hum is there, low level, existant, all around me.
I see gas prices, the hum rises in pitch. I work at the food bank, and see people begging not only for food, but for a bit of "gas money", the pitch rises. I see cues and hints all around me, and the pitch rises yet again.
As some of you may know, I was going to teach a class on oil at our local vo-tech center.
I found out yesterday that the class was cancelled due to lack of interest.
Sorry folks, but they are sheeple. They are reality tv watching, cell phone yacking, totally clueless, lets go shopping, economists say everything will be fine, sheeple.
They are McMansions buying, SUV driving, debt ridden, clueless idiots.
They are wasteful, shamefully wasteful, Swiffer wet mop wasteful scum. They mock our only sensible president as the "cardigan doctrine" president.
They are cynical, smart ass sarcastic morons., and I wash my hands of them.
My husband and I have now decided to prepare, hunker down, and do the best we can.

Disrespect? Respect is not a gift, respect is a reward.
These fools don't deserve a reward. They deserve what is coming to them.
I attended a sustainability fair on Saturday and set up a peak oil booth.
The response to peak oil was good but hubby and I were preaching to the choir.
There were several biodiesel vehicles and two electric cars that looked like golf carts.
The folks involved were so egocentric that they could not make a connection as to how everybody else could afford the vehicles, or find the fuel.
The EROEI formula did not seem to make any sense to them and they blew it off.
They waxed eloquent on ethanol and biodiesel.
The only person with any sense was the key note speaker.
A Mr. Murphy. He spoke about conservation.
My mental state. I am frustrated, and somewhat concerned, but have had to stop worrying because it causes lupus flares.
I am preparing by reducing electricity use,
learning to store and rotate large amounts of food. (I buy bulk from a co-op, and we raise a lot of our own food).
Hubby and I are going to be attending a bio-intensive gardening workshop.
I have reduced my medication needs to just one prescription, and a lot of natural stuff.
I feel better on the natural stuff.
I cook all of my food from scratch, and have little reliance on ready to cook.
We do not eat out very often.
I play Nintendo.
Yep, I'm 50, and I love Zelda and Metroid.
Pheba
One of the hardest things for me to give up was my dryer. I love fluffy dry laundry. But, after hubby put up a wonderful set of clotheslines I find that for the most part I prefer air dried laundry. Our country air makes the sheets and towels smell divine. No fabric softener on the planet can match that smell. The only thing I prefer tossed in the dryer, my nightgowns. I find them to be a bit scratchy when line dried. But, I toss them just for a few minutes, then hang them up wet, and they dry soft.
My one energy weakness, hot water!. With lupus, nothing is better than a good hot soak. I take a lot of baths. We heat our hot water with wood, but I am still wasting resources.

Where are your figures that back this statement up? No one knows how many people the earth can support, and i totally refute the idea that after peak oil we'll eseentially have the resources equivalent to the year 1700. Nonsense. I actually think that the peak will be a very, very long plateau with no significant decline rate at all. I think we'll be pupming along at 80mbarrels a day for another good while yet and that we won't enter the final arc of decline until nearer 2025 or later.

I can't wait to see the looks on doomers faces when absolutely nothing happens. :-D
