Euphonics and Bad Grammar

Unread postby PenultimateManStanding » Fri 30 Sep 2005, 19:33:42

The Rolling Stones version of It's All Over Now has the line go like this:

Baby used to stay out all night long
She made me cry, she done me wrong

Ry Cooder's version of the same song goes like this:

Baby used to stay out all night long
She made me cry, she did me wrong

Now besides the fact that Jagger sings better than Ry Cooder ever could, it just sounds better in the ungrammatical version.

Yeah, the Stones had a license alright. I don't know if any of you have ever heard Ry Cooder play the guitar or not but he's terrific. Did the soundtrack for many a movie including Paris, Texas. He just can't sing for crap.

I'm remimded of the story about Frank Sinatra and Lauren Bacall where Frank tried to spout off on some political opinion or whatnot and Lauren said, 'shut up Frank and sing'. I want to say to Ry Cooder when he tries to sing, 'shut up Ry and play'.
