Plane in trouble over Los Angeles

Unread postby Ebyss » Wed 21 Sep 2005, 21:07:52

An Airbus A320 is making an emergency landing in L.A., it's front landing gear is twisted at a 90 degree angle. The pictures are being shown live on tv. I'm praying for everyone on board. :(

Wow im watching this right now, it's wild. I wonder if the direct tv in the plane gets MSNBC? are they watching this right now? what do they think of the coverage, how come the passengers can't call the media on their skyphones? we should be able to get an interview right now. are cell phones still working? :-D

The Captain of that plane has a lot on his mind right about now. He makes about 100,000 a year and has crappy benefits and no retirement. This is why you pay people good money to do this kind of stuff. It tends to make it a competitive job and you get results like you just saw on the TV.

Bravo Zulu to that Captain, nice job.

Well said AP. Here's to you and all the other great pilots that fly these airplanes. It makes me feel even safer to see that kinda of skill demonstrated. Freakin awesome!!

I have a feeling every one of you guys could do that though.

Are you implying he "only" makes $100,000 a year? Because, um, that is a substantial sum of money.

Its not alot when you consider what some folks make who have much less liability in thier hands on a day to day basis. I didnt say it wasn't a good sum, just basically that it is why we get paid a certain amount. Airline pilots get paid for what they know, not necessarily for what they do. This is one instance where you definitely earn every penny you are paid!

With this latest round of cuts and bankruptcies you are going to drive out the level of skill you want in these positions. Its just economics. The folks who can do this job, and not everyone can, will likely go do other things that are more lucrative. You then have to lower your standards for qualifying and your safety levels will suffer. I predict over the next ten years the accident levels increase as you lose the motivated and experienced pilots who help to make air travel so safe. You wont be able to maintain that standard as pay and working conditions go into the toilet like they are doing now.

Come on then, what's the wacko conspiracy theory about this then? Does it ever occur to you guys that some things are just random, and coincidences have no significance?

I had one loony telling me how amazing it was that the apparent size of the Moon is exactly right to cover the Sun during total eclipses, and how that must be really significant and mean something about our Universe. I pointed out that the Moon was originally a lot closer to Earth, and has moved outwards and will continue to do so, making his lunatic Moon theory (pun intended) somewhat weak. He seemed slightly fazed, but came back with "yeah, but isn't it amazing that right now it is - maybe someone is giving us a message about our current time. Maybe a warning of some sort. We should..." His voice receded in the distance.
It's all downhill from here

No, it's not a conspiracy theory. I'm sure you're not seeing it in the TV news, but there's almost an emergency landing PER DAY here in Italy lately. A friend of mine working at Alitalia says he had three emergency landings in twenty years of work, and another three in the last THREE months!!!!
I'm sure every country is facing the same situation.
On TV they openly say that companies are trying to save money on maintenance because of the fuel costs.

Better stop taking airplanes...

You might want to look into aircraft maintenance practices and personnel. Airlines are switching to uncertified mechanics for many jobs and are cutting maintenance to the absolute minimum to save costs. I will not fly commercial again unless I have no other option.
Stop filling dumpsters, as much as you possibly can, and everything will get better.

Just think it through.
It's not hard to do.

Well, I really don't know much about flying, but that pilot looked like he aced the landing. A very light touch, made it look routine.

I am so glad that it turned out alright. That landing was beautiful...

My family is determined to fly to the US to see relatives this christmas.... ACK!! 8O 8O

I am trying to convince them that bird flu and terrorism and maitenance issues are together too much of a risk to make the trip. Buuuut no, we have to go.. :(

all these crashes/emergencies lately are very disturbing.
