Being Sensible

Unread postby harlanater » Mon 12 Sep 2005, 01:58:33

My situation is simple, I'm 20 years old, living on my own, going to college etc. I'm a server at a mexican restaurant in Bloomington Mn. Theres few buses here, and I drive to get to work. My car is also a 92 volvo 240 dl. I live by school so I only have to cross the street.

I discovered Peak Oil when doing a google search for the end of the world. I had been feeling this deep dread feeling in my stomach, but I couldn't put a label on it. When I read that sight I couldn't believe my eyes. If this was true I would be cooked like a marshmellow over an open fire.

I had my parents read me and they brushed it off as some paranoid cult. I, however, had a feeling it was correct. My friends, mostly labled stoners, listened, and many agreed on my proposal. They all had many different solutions and scenerios for the future. One suggested that we build massive light rail on our current road infrustructure. It would be easy because it already layed out for most of the population. Another thought there would be massive deforestation once the heat was turned off and looting, Personally I feel helpless and have accepted my fate.

I dont have the resources to escape, so I know i am doomed. I will enjoy today for tommorow will be worse.

Welcome to the forums. :)
Don’t panic too much. While it’s certainly something to worry about, there’s no point causing yourself undue stress. Anything is possible in the future; so despite the certainty some people have about the future, know one can really know what is going to happen. Maybe we will get though this somehow. Light rail on the road certainly sounds like a good idea.

Just remember the important lesson Sarah Connor told us in Terminator 2; the future is not set. There is no fate but what we make.

-Stay sensible.

harlanater, you don't know what your fate is to accept, none of us do.(ok what Omnitir said)

Be as self reliant as possible

In a SHTF moment, of any description, don't go where the government tell you if you can possibly avoid it.

Also don't just stay where you are.

Don't panic.

Well done on enjoying today, I hope you enjoy tomorrow too. 8)

I had my parents read me and they brushed it off as some paranoid cult.

People don't like to believe in an unpleasant future. They imagine that since things have only got better during their lifetimes it can only continue (like people thought in the late '90s the stock market only goes up, now house prices only go up...yeah).

There are lots of threads about talking to other people about peak oil or not. Easy solution is not to, unless the person is open minded.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', ' ')I, however, had a feeling it was correct. My friends, mostly labled stoners, listened, and many agreed on my proposal. They all had many different solutions and scenerios for the future. One suggested that we build massive light rail on our current road infrustructure. It would be easy because it already layed out for most of the population.

See, you're being constructive already (is a stoner somebody who's always stoned?). Your friends are on the right track. A good network of electrified railways will be very important (luckily much of Europe, where I live, already has this).

The Planning for the Future forum has lots of good threads, some by young people like you.

I have the same worry. I think to outcome could be different in different parts of the world. Third World countries will be really bad. Developed countries, though, if our political leaders face the facts eventually, might learn to preserve the most essential things (I'm a moderate for developed countries).

I don't think we're all doomed. Each man makes his own fate, as the saying goes. Now each country/region makes its own fate.

Being young you have a great advantage. Go to the Planning for the Future forum and identify what knowledge and skills you can acquire for the post peak world.
