I'm working at a popular drug store chain until I find a job as an EMT. We sell Shell gift cards. Sometimes we sell Shell gift cards by the seashore
. We often receive e-mails from the district manager warning us of customers who will use stolen credit cards to buy several $20+ gift cards.
Well, yesterday evening, a customer attempted to pay for $150 in Shell gift cards, as well as some other misc. items. He used the self-service credit card machine, so I thought it would be appropriate to verify his signature. There was no signature written on the reserved strip of the card. Oddly enough, he was able to confirm the card's billing zip code when the register prompted. However, when I informed him of our policy to check ID, along w/ manager approval, on large credit card purchage (esp. w/ giftcards).
"Oh, nevermind then, I don't have the cash on me", he said. "Just take the cards off".
"Well, you can still use your credit card. You'll just have to wait about a half minute for the manager's approval", I replied.
"Uh, no. No, that's okay. You can just take off the rest of the stuff off too. Thanks", he said hurriedly.
I informed the manager on duty of the incident, and he called the surrounding store to provide a description of the customer.
Stealing gas is wrong.
