Gas prices: I've heard it all now...

From http://www.missourigasprices.com $this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'g')ruff2, you know thats a load of crap and a poor excuse because there ARE SUVs out there that get great gas mileage. The Toyota RAV4 and Honda CRV both get around 28mpg highway and will hold 6 people.

28 mpg is good gas mileage? 8O

And this.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '&')gt; "it is high time we ALL work together to preserve our natural resources
> before it is TOO LATE..."

But no matter how much we conserve, we will eventually consume all of every finite resource. That's the definition of the term "finite". Conservation is helpful for the short-term, but does nothing to solve the long term issue.

Luckily, gasoline isn't a finite resource. Refined from natural crude it is, but direct synthesis directly from hydrogen and carbon isn't difficult. It just requires energy.

Can people really be this dumb? It only takes energy to synthesis gas?

28 mpg isn't s***. I bet you some backyard mechanic could take a RAV4, install a VW Jetta turbodiesel after fabricating the proper parts to fit it to the RAV4's tranny along with custom motor mounts and other fixtures, and have that thing getting 35-40 mpg with perhaps a slight gain in performance...

There's no reason why we couldn't have full size cars the size of Crown Vics getting 80-90 mpg using a diesel-electric hybrid drive. We just need to clean the aerodynamics of cars up a bit, get that coefficient drag down to the .17-.20 region. Look up the GM Precept concept hybrid for info on that.
