PO sucks arse!

Unread postby something_awfull » Sat 13 Aug 2005, 11:44:31

When I started looking into PO and learned what was going on, I sort of just sat on the road and watched them big bright lights get closer, then I kind of ran around in small tight circles yelling "fuck, fuck, fuck", now I just watch adverts for plasma screen tv's and hugh motor vehicles with bemusement. Im currently trying to work out things I should probably be starting to hoard, and wondering where I can get a firearm and when I should get one.

I take it you live in Australia.

Their rules are kindof like in the UK.

You may own a gun for recreational use or if you can 'prove' you need one (i.e: you live in the countryside and need to shoot dingos).

So my advice would be join a gun club and buy a shotgun. That's what I will be doing once I get out there.

I had thought of that, but at the risk of sounding paranoid, I dont want to get a licence and then be known to the authorities as such. Im wondering if I should 'acquire' something at some stage, maybe when oil gets over $80. Why do you want to come over here? water is a real problem at the moment, even Sydney's biggest damns are below 50% with no rain on the horizon.

I served 4 years in the Army, and the only weapons I have ever shot are m-16's & m203 grenade launchers.

I have never in my life been hunting, or even in the very least killed anything. I find the whole idea of killing animals unsettling... I am thinking vegeterism is more up my alley

I totally relate. I was quite depressed for a week or two. Now, I am making sure to put my babies in cloth nappies, trying to work out how on earth to grow veggies, and laughing at myself wryly as I soak in a hot bath with a carton of chocolate milk and then turn on my electric blanket. And laugh at the world hopelessly with every car commercial. And wonder despairingly about the future of medicine as I take my cold and flu tablets. Eurgh.

I posted a link to a video on how to slaughter and kill animals. (sorry bad joke for those who have seen it.) Anyway I don't think you'll be eating cows in the near future, think smaller animals and/or plant material.

I too want to get get a gun and learn how to use it but then you have to get a gun licence and then your on a government watchlist big time. As soon as you become a gun owner you lose some rights as police can search your house without a warrent i believe. You also have to keep your guns unloaded and locked in a safe or cabnet of some sort or you get locked up. Also only single shot rifles are legal, any simi automatic rifles are banned since the port arthur incedent. Those simi's would be my preference. Don't look at the other peoples way of life and feel jealous because of their oil addiction, be independant and better than them. The people you see today are the ones who would rather die than give up oil. As such is history, times change, people die. If your one of those pasty white chubby kids/young men who where given too much motherly love and protection, who lived in a sheltered environment growing up playing video games and watching enormous amounts of tv and weren't allowed outside to ride a bike because mother was afraid you might hurt yourself, you'll need to start eliminating those things have sheltered and comfort you. Get rid of the tv or reduce watching, use the internet for news or for websites such as this (no games), eat cheaper food which doesn't have a comfort value in it, don't use a heater to keep warm use clothing, start going camping, walk or ride to where you need to go. You see you first need wean yourself off oil and live a less comfortable existance to harden your body and mind in preperation for the hard times ahead. It is my view that it is irrelevant wether your life is lived happily or comfortably compared to a life where you live unhappy or uncomforably. It is a waste of life imho to only seek happiness and a comfortable life and even then people say they are unhappy. Try walking the path less trodden, seek adversary, adapt and seek survival at all costs no matter how hungry or exausted you may become, never give up. Your attitude is KEY if you will be one of the lucky few who make it through. Best of luck.

Well something_awfull, I was always rather depressed, I am less so now. :)

Don't just buy a gun illegaly and hide it, when you need to use it you'll end up on the wrong end! I would like a gun too but live in the UK and think its not an option, damn those lucky Americans

Don't worry too much about the water either, at least not in the immediate future. Think about the waste that will be eliminated due to an economic slowdown. See how much water is used washing shiny cars and moistening lush looking lawns.

I agree with dukat, stop watching TV, but I still play a few games

Look at the great work by EnviroMission here Specop posted this (just to show I'm not goal hanging), its in Australia.

PO is bad, especially for those who want to keep to the ordinary. A simpler way will be better, just a little harder.

I don't know of many places (I can't think of one, and I did a study of it in college) where you could live as a vegetarian w/o any imported foods. Think about it - w/o refridgerators, how do you keep veggies throughout the winter? Some you can can - but still, the fat of meat packs a greater punch with regards to survival. I say this bc my body rebels against me if I do not eat protein from animals (such as fish, chicken, etc).

Wildsparrow - There are an AMAZING amount of herbal remedies available for almost any ailment. Take Calamine lotion - it has zinc in it - not very good for us. To reduce swelling/itching due to sting bites you can use witch hazel instead. Get some books and you'd be surprised. Aloe Vera plants are cheap and easy to keep. That does alot.

You can build an earthship thermal mass refrigerator. old tires and recycled cans and material. It is not impossible at all. there is a canstant 58 degrees below the frost layer in our earth.

A thermal mass refrigerator? This is the first I have heard of this. Are there any links or doyou have any further info?

And I have been looking into a lot of stuff on the internet since I first heard about peak oil..my father used to work for an oil company for most of his life before he retired, and he knows of wells that they wouldn't pump because it just wasn't profitable enough for them, so he thinks that peak oil is some kind of conspiracy by the oil companies

All in all, I am okay where I am at; there are a lot of worse places I could be, such as where I used to live in Ventura..only an hour drive north of LA..while there are food sources around there a mass migration of refugees fleeing the city would quickly do a lot of harm in a place like Ventura. I moved here for financial reasons as the real estate market is a lot better in Oklahoma and I do have some distant relatives here, but I am beginning to realize that it was best for me to move here for other reasons as well. The rural town I live in doesn't even have an interestate nearby; the closest one is over 30 miles away.

Well, keeping veggies fresh through the winter is achieved sometimes by a very special procedure called "canning" there's also "drying"?? LOL

:P

Something_Awfull -- when I found out about PO, I got pretty depressed, too. But --that's good, if you think about it.

Depression has actually been shown to be a biologically advantageous reaction to over-stress.

So, it's just mother nature making sure you worry about this. Worrying creates solutions.

And the biggest solutionto PO, imo, is to accept in a kind of buddhist way. Then you can still function while problem solving.

I thought I was the only one that circled saying "f*ck f*ck f*ck". Except I do it for no reason at all!
Stop filling dumpsters, as much as you possibly can, and everything will get better.

Just think it through.

Basically just underground storage. Root cellar were always cooler, though not enough in the summertime.

My mom grew up on a farm in the Depression and they had a hole (chamber) dug in the side of a hill. As later vegetables were harvested out of their garden, they laid down a bed of straw, then put a layer of vegetables on it (turnips, beets, cabbage, onions, pumpkin, squash, etc). Then a layer of straw, a layer of vegetables, and so forth until the chamber was filled up. Then they put an old door over the entrance and leaned an iron pipe against it to hold it shut. When they needed something, they'd go out and get enough for a couple of weeks, keeping the rest in the root cellar.

Thomas Jefferson had an underground icebox/house, which was essentially a pit loaded with ice blocks cut from the frozen pond in the winter. He also used straw (or sawdust) and there was a lid to keep animals out.
