$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'W')ell, based on energy companies earnings it isnt too far os a stretch to think we're getting gouged. And quiter badly.

Your gonna have a hard time convincing someone we're facing a shortage when oil companies are making money hand over fist, posting record earnings that exceed ANY companies earnings in the history of business.

This is exactly the reasoning that got us into the predicament we are in...the continual demand by North American's for cheap oil. What amazes me is here we are likely fast approaching peak oil and there are still people who post here regularily who either don't get it or don't care. Go figure.

One of the things that Simmons has commented on in his public speeches is that of total fuel useage in North America most of it goes for transportation of materials....food, manufactured goods, fuel etc. He makes the valid point that if we wanted to make a very good stab at decreasing overall demand all transport should be shifted to trains. This of course would require some upgrades to the rail system as it stands, eventual conversion of all trains to electric etc. Not only would this decrease overall fuel demand it would also decrease total vehicles on the roads which in turn would decrease road maintanence costs etc.

I just know I'm going to be having fun when I make the 100km trip south
to the nearest supermarket later this week with my box trailer attached to
the back of my diesel powered SUV and $5000 cash in my back pocket
I think I'll be making more in interest on the food in my larder than money in the bank :)

Currency another petrol pumper

Economists fear petrol prices may jump by another 20c a litre when the New Zealand dollar loses some of its value.

They warned yesterday - as world oil prices surged past US$66 ($93) a barrel - that the impact would touch all aspects of life.

Although supermarkets claim to be holding out for now against raising food prices, the Road Transport Forum said freight firms were having to pass on a 40 per cent increase in diesel costs in the past year....

Subsidize truckers?

But - what about the Free Market? Wouldn't that annoy the God of the Invisible Hand?

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('PenultimateManStanding', 'D')oesn't seem too likely to me that $3 gasoline could unravel everything. Hard times, sure. Stock Market plunging, inflation, unemployment soaring, all that's pretty likely, in fact; but its gotta be something more than that to tear everything apart real quick.

Financial collapse will lead to societal and cultural collapse. This time, when the stock market goes down, it won't come back up. Your "hard times" scenario looks like the Great Depression. Except this time it will be much harsher, simply because we are on a fiat system. House of cards tumbles down.

According to most everyone here, GWB is incapable of uttering one word of truth. How can he possibly become the Peak Oiler's buddy overnight by waking up and telling the world what needs to be done? Why would you believe him if he started blathering about it anyway? I find it funny that such a dichotomy of beleif can exist.

It ain't gonna happen. I believe they know what's coming, especially with Bush and Cheney's background. The only way to realistically deal, is to meet each problem/crises as it arises. No blaming or insight into the fact that the world is sliding down the back side of Hubbert's Peak. It's going to be ugly, and it's happening sooner than anyone thought. To come clean about what is going on with world oil production would cause a larger problem much sooner than they have to deal with it already. Market panic/speculation would drill up prices much faster IMHO. Nah, the average Joe is going to be left alone, pissing and moaning about "price gouging". He will picket, strike and kick and scream about big oil co profits and unfairness all the way to his grave.

You would be surprised by how many educated folks I deal with every day who believe that is all it is.
