The Idiot Lantern

Wow a post about how much people hate TV.

It can be good, documentaries are a useful and easy way to introduce people to topics, but most TV is Trash.

How much worse would your life be if you don't see that episode of friends repeated for the third time !!!!

In the UK we have a reality TV show called Big Brother, where millions of people every year watch a group of people live in a house for 10 weeks slowly being voted out by the public. The most idiotic and pointless pastime in the world.

GET SOME HELP. LEARN TO USE YOUR BRAIN.

TV is ideal for keeping the masses distracted and interested in buying your product like the good little consumers they are. It tells them to buy more beauty products because they are ugly, buy more electrical goods because they have more buttons than your one, buy more, buy more, buy more, buy more.

Oscar Wilde once said "Religion is the opium of the masses".

TV is the worlds new Religion.

How Wilde would have laughed at that! He wasn't a really political animal. However, I think Mr Marx would be offended to have been confused for Wilde and what he said was "Religion is the opium of the people."

Karl Marx
To the criticism of the Hegel philosophy of law. Introduction
Written at the end of of 1843 - January 1844

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"French-German yearbooks", Paris 1844

|378| For Germany the criticism of the religion is essentially finished, and the criticism of the religion is the condition of all criticism.

The everyday existence of the mistake is compromised, after its himmlische et oratio per aris focis |Prayer for altar and household|is disproved. Humans, who found the widerschein of its in the fantastic reality of the sky, where he looked for a superhuman, only, will not be any more bent, only the light of its to find only Unmen where it looks for its reality and search must.

The foundation of the irreligioesen criticism is: Humans make the religion , the religion make not humans. The religion is the self-confident its and the self feeling of humans, who acquired themselves either yet or did not lose already again. But humans , that are not an abstract nature squatting except the world. Humans, that are the world of humans , State of, partnership. This State of, this partnership produce the religion, a wrong world consciousness , because they are a wrong world. The religion is more mirror-image ritualistic the general theory of this world, its enzyklopaedisches manual, their logic in popular form, their POINT d'honneur|Point of honour|, their enthusiasm, its moral sanction, its solemn addition, its general comfort and justification. It is the fantastic implementation of the human nature, because the human nature does not possess true reality. The fight against the religion is thus indirectly the fight against that world, whose mental flavour is the religion.

The religious misery is in one the expression real miserable and into the Protestation against the real misery. The religion is the sigh of the pressed creature, the mind of a heartless world, as it is the spirit of spiritless conditions. It is the Opium of the people.

Devil, I know Oscar Wilde is not Karl Marx and I didn't confuse them.

I could swear it was the Opium of the Masses that Wilde originally wrote but I'm only 95% sure of that so I won't argue.

Wilde was marginally after Marx and Wilde is the person who is famous for the saying, so I'm supprised it is lying in some text written by Marx.

But then

Most people are other people. Their thoughts are someone else's opinions, their lives a mimicry, their passions a quotation.

Soooooo true. I have like 10 friends very literally addicted to the american version. I watched it once when I was at a friends house, and my god it's ridiculous.

It vividly reminded me of high school and all the petty little squabbles, fights, and namecalling that went on in the halls for no reason other than someone didn't like your hair, shoes clothes, etc...... Honestly it has to be the most juvenile show I've ever seen.

"Lucy said...... Tom did this.......Well I never..........what a loser.........he thinks he's so cool............." yeah lets go sit on the couch and talk behind everyones back somemore. Since it's not like we've been put up for FREE in a freaking mansion for 3 months. If I lived at the big brother house for even a week I'd be like "sweeeeeeet" If I got kicked off right away, meh. My life wasn't so bad the way it was, and I just got to live in a mansion for a week for free..........KICK ASS!

On the other hand should I be selected to live in this house I would be suddenly thrust back into the middle of a bunch of Jocks, Preps, Geeks, skids (my personal high school CLASS) and freaks. Since these are the groups everyone is put into during highschool apparently these would also be the lines upon which me make class distinction in the house. I don't think I could handle that again.

It's so nice to be grown up now and be able to distance myself from people who still wish to define themselves and others in such a way.

Oh yeah and DOWN WITH TV

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'I')'ve also noticed that television and depression exist in a bit of a mutual feedback loop.

Funny you should mention that. I've suspected for a long time that watching too much TV can lead to depression. A lot of my friends are addicted to the boob tube...and on Prozac. They seem to go together.

There was a study a few years back, that found too much Internet use was linked with depression. As I recall, the study found that using the Internet to talk to other people was okay (e-mail, chat, etc.). It was "solitary" Internet use that seemed linked to depression - things that kept you from interacting with other people.

Sounds like TV to me...
