I'm thinking of going backpacking in Europe next year. I might go for a couple of months and spend over two thousand pounds.

Considering the situation with the world and what the future might hold do you think this is a wise idea?

Consider also that there is no way i am going to be near fully prepared if the peak occurs in the next couple of years because I'm clearing debts.

However I want something good to look forward to instead of waking up every morning and checking the news to see how bad things are getting regarding Bird flu, Iran, oil prices etc.

What do you reckon?

travelling is for the narrow minded and it closes of the mind.

if you want to do it, then do it. though it doesn't appeal to me much - however, im very much a homebody.

i can imagine being in foreign countries, and it doesnt seem all that great. you're just somewhere where other people are, but in slightly different surroundings. no idea why that is appealing.

ive visited france and america. both countries were exactly as i expected them to be, and i might as well have saved the cash and stayed at home really.

also - bear in mind you might get murdered on your trip.

You may never get the chance again. In fact I'll be surprised if you're able to go next year. Don't buy your plane tickets far in advance, and don't fly Delta. (Oh, you're in UK... hell, just swim across then).

Yes I would do it. Spend time getting to know people and learn to appreciate their daily life. Check out Switzerland or Italy. Absolutely beautiful in both places and Switzerland is especially great for hiking.

Have sufficient liquid funds available (for example via more than one credit and/or debit card) that you and your traveling companions can walk into any airport on a moment's notice and buy an immediate ticket back home.

Then keep your ears open for news about bird flu and terrorist events. You can do this without getting all paranoid or anxious, just make it part of your daily routine to tune in BBC World Service or some such. Listening to BBC twice a day won't spoil the mood of the trip.

Personally I'm also a homebody who doesn't have much of an urge to travel. But if you want to do it, be safe and have a good trip.

And take pictures in the airport and onboard the airplane if it's allowed. Something to show your grandkids, at a time when airplane trips will be rare. Just think of the nostalgic memories, and the regrets at having complained about the food and the security lines...

Heck Stu, go on a merchant boat. I suppose it will be cheaper this way and you might be able to take a bike with you. Then bike away through Europe which is much more friendly for bikers.
