Widespread environmental destruction on Earth

Unread postby rs » Thu 04 Aug 2005, 17:56:03

Article on BBC describes widespread environmental destruction on Earth visisble by Shuttle crew.

BBC Article

"Commander Eileen Collins described on Thursday how widespread environmental destruction on Earth could be seen from the shuttle.

"Sometimes you can see how there is erosion, and you can see how there is deforestation," Commander Collins said.

"It's very widespread in some parts of the world. We would like to see, from the astronauts' point of view, people take good care of the Earth and replace the resources that have been used."

Sometimes I feel utter despair at what we are doing to our home. All of us have the ability of awareness of our environment but so many choose to ignore it. Very depressing.

Before I learned about peak oil I was pretty sure envoronmental destruction would shut us down soon anyway. Even if 2-3 more giant oil fields were found we would have destoyed everything anyway.
With peak oil at least there is something for those who survive.

We are screwing ourselves off the face of the planet, literally!
Stop filling dumpsters, as much as you possibly can, and everything will get better.

Just think it through.
It's not hard to do.

Indeed. Peak oil might save the planet from irreversible climate change - providing it will be impossible to extract coal as fast as oil has been extracted. The only thing we need now is a nice global epidemic to thin the human herd, and people are working on that too.

It reminds me of that part of the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy where the survivors of a spaceshiprash make leave the official currency. The immediate result is the defoliation of the entire planet in a blaze of greed, resulting in hyperinflation and an economic depression. This patent foolishness is absurd enough for a laugh, but it may be just too close to the bone for comfort.

I'm officially depressed now.

You have good reason when every response to economic difficulty involves increased destruction of the environment.

Just wait until PO takes hold to see how rapidly we can screw the planet.

I think it was in "So long and thanks for all the fish". It was the ship with all the useless people in it like salepeople, hairdressers etc. (no offense intended to anybody). The captain bathed all day. I loved the exchange between himself and Ford. There were supposed to be three ships and the middlemen were sent off first. The captain is trying to recall the reason why they were the first to go - Ford becomes annoyed at the captains dilly dallying and shouts out "you're all a load of useless idiots" whereupon the captain says "oh that's it, that was the reason".

Classic - I apologise for my stunted recall of the story and for the appalling grammar and spelling in my first post.

It was a cunning excuse to get rid of the useless third of the planet - now if only we could think of a similar scheme.

Any thoughts or ideas folks???????

when u have two extremes: capitalism and socialism things will only get worse. The systems are canabilistic. Very little room for spiritual purity.
Last night i was abused by a PETA person. They believe nothing should die and have absolutely no understanding of ecology. As our NATURAL ecosystems get replaced by domesticated beasts that have absolutely very little to do witht the functioning of the lifesupport systems of the planet. But they want nothign to be killed. So just let the exotics free all over. shut down those systems. Yes what the fuck is going to solve the problems. Cows, dogs, cats, pigs, chickens? Humans are the logical higher level beings. LOL. so u see its coming from all directions as the shtf. Its too overwhelming and permeated. Cuz if u are to build a sustainable piece of society u can not have these entities. There must be comonality. With these entities its finality. my way or no way. even in the face of common sense and logic. so the domestic cat epidemic will continue to spread diseases and natural destruction as an example. Oh we love cats. Let em all out and run and destroy.,
