Pirates hijack Gas Tanker in Malacca Strait: Problems in another major oil chokepoint...solved for now... Gunmen seize gas tanker
A GANG of 35 pirates armed with machine guns and rocket launchers seized a fully-laden gas tanker in the Malacca Strait at the weekend, a piracy watchdog reported today, rekindling fears of a terrorist attack in the vital waterway...

..The narrow 960km waterway bordered by Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia is used by about 50,000 ships a year carrying a third of world trade and half its oil supplies.
Let us make him who shall nourish and sustain us. What shall we do to be invoked; to be remembered in the earth.
We have tried with our first creatures but we could not make them venerate us.
So let us try to make obedient respectful beings who shall

After PO, we will maybe see supertankers guarded by the US navy from Middle-East countries, with american military well installed there, to the US coasts.

What a beautiful world! The sea will not be unsecured anymore and everybody will be happy... 8)

As oil/gas becomes more valuable than gold, we will see more of this.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Kingcoal', 'A')s oil/gas becomes more valuable than gold, we will see more of this.

Pound for pound, the price of oil would have to be about 36,000 times higher than it is now for oil to be more valuable than gold. That comes out to about $2 million per barrel.

If you have one thing (gold) and it is of dubious value compared to the thing you need, the value of the thing you have tends to go down and the value of what you need tends to go up. For instance, what was the value of gold when private ownership of it was made illegal by FDR during the depression? To many, gold became worthless because they couldn't sell it and they needed paper money to feed themselves.

Asia Times article from last year:
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'K')UALA LUMPUR - While it benefits some parties to talk up the threat of terror - whether to gain a contract or a foothold in a foreign land - the Singaporean, Malaysian and Indonesian governments, burdened with monitoring the world's busiest strait, would like nothing more than to prove to the world that everything's under control.
Indeed, with 600 vessels and 11 million barrels of oil passing through the Malacca Strait each day, everything has to be under control.

And where do these pirates expect to sell the stuff...? And what about GPS on these vessels so they can be tracked if the captain presses an emergency button...?
Or better yet, effective armaments on these vessels so they can defend themselves against acts of piracy. I for one would have no hesitation to pull the trigger if I were facing a boatload of pirates. Self defense under fear of immediate threat to one's life.

Maybe they'll refine it themselves.
I'm sure there's a black market for oil now that it's expensive.

Correlational argument Dac :-D
I could correlate anything in the world, one needs a theory to turn correlation in causation. Maybe the two variables are linked due to a confounding factor.
Industry burning fossil fuels causing both an increase in employment opportunities and a decrease in pirates while warming the planet :P

Even the software pirates are going down in many countries, including the USA. It's due to lawsuits.

Am I reading the chart right?

There were only 17 pirates in 2000? If so you could surely give us their names :-)

I thought piracy was going up in the Molucca straits and such.

On the other hand (re James Kunstler) there surely must be now an empty niche for pirates...me hearties....Ron, ES, Dac. lets get us a boat and raise the

Peak Pirates

Unread postby Omnitir » Sun 13 Aug 2006, 20:29:06

In response to calls to teach Intelligent Design along side science in classrooms, Bobby Henderson has created the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

What I find particularly interesting is the startling revelation that global warming appears to be the direct result of the peaking and resulting decline of pirates world wide. We have seen many similar graphs on PO.com proving beyond doubt that all the problems in the world are the direct cause of oil consumption, and so I urge you to apply the same reasoning to this remarkable evidence to the cause of global warming. Take action! Become a pirate today and help stop global warming! jpg
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'Y')ou may be interested to know that global warming, earthquakes, hurricanes, and other natural disasters are a direct effect of the shrinking numbers of Pirates since the 1800s. For your interest, I have included a graph of the approximate number of pirates versus the average global temperature over the last 200 years. As you can see, there is a statistically significant inverse relationship between pirates and global temperature.
