I just found a good utility to have "just in case". http://dban.sourceforge.net/ It will securly erase any and all data on your computer. Let's see the USA PATRIOT Act of 2001 have any effect on a computer with completly destroyed data. :twisted:

Do not know about the Patriot Act but it will surely help with the Fiance Act I or the Girlfriend ActII. Somehow having acess to one's personal account on one's computer is a pre-requisite for a quiet (and blissful) weekend :P :P

Smash might still leave *some* chunks of magnetic particles that can be read. Melt is good, a la Terminator-style. Hasta la vista, baby. Could also try de-gaussing, but not with any lousy old magnet, you need a big, powerful one.

Software wipes only work up to an extent. If the adversary has got an unlimited budget, MFM (magnetic force microscopy) could be used to extract the data from disks that have been software-wiped multiple times.

Forget the standards. 25 tons of pressure at 2200°C, that should do the job nicely. :)

PGP has file-at-a-time (safe deletion) as well as free space wiping.

I read something once where researchers were able to use quantum properties to read data off a hard drive after it had been magnetically wiped and soaked in acid. The only truely total erase is to grind the thing into dust and scatter it to the winds. :P

That one is outdated. Current one required 35 passes for secure data deletion with Peter Gutmann data deletion algorithm. By the way the Gutmann method was outdated as it was first released in 1996 and applicable to those 80MB MLM HD only.

The best way will be

1. writing zeroes all over
2. low level format
3. shredding the disc drive into small pieces
4. magnet treatment of the scrap metal
5. burning in their own waste incinerating plant

Or write all the virus files to the HD until full. Later deleted them. If they can recovered your files, they will be infected with computer virus.

I'm still thinking back to the ending scene in Terminator 2. I've got a few (old, "small", spoilt, etc.) HDD's that I'm holding on to because there doesn't seem to be a convenient pool of molten metal nearby ... where are the pools of molten metal when you need them? :lol:
