I only drink intermittently. I tend to turn to food or stories (or chocolate) when stressed rather than alcohol.
Kind regards, Katkinkate

I drink every day. Aftefter work, I start drinking as soon as I walk in the front door of the house. (I have a 24 pack by the door at all times). I don't stop drinking until I go to bed. During the weekends, I start drinking at 12:00 sharp unless I intend togo shooting that day. If I go shooting, I will start drinking as soon as I put my gun back in the cabinit. I don't stop drinking until I go to bed. n Probably in the last 3 years, there has maybe been one day where I was completely sober.

I drink a bottle of wine a day. When I go to work, I have a really bad hangover. Every day...

I know it's not healthy to drink that much. I want to quit drinking and start smoking cannabis instead. Is cannabis better than alcohol? I've only tried it once but I freaked out and some friends had to take me home. I was really drunk that time though. I've heard that you should never mix alcohol and THC.

I'm officially up to two 6-packs of beer this year. (although one is only half done so far). When stressed I'd rather go for a jog.

I hope the decline of industrial suburbanized motorized civilization and relocalization will bring the return of neighborhood pubs where you drink socially with people you know again.

I drink too much, about 12 beers after work. I never drink during the day, though I likely should since I mostly feel like crap during the day. I remember the days that I smoked weed with great fondness. I really feel that "quiting" weed was a huge mestake. I tried to go back to it but I can't, it makes me paranoid. If you smoke MJ, don't stop, you can't go back if you stop.

i quit drinking on a regurlar basis at 20, starting smoking weed since ... and it makes me far less paranoid then before. When stoned i am too relax and i lack alertness.
Anyway, what i can tell by experience and seeing people around me here in Belgium, every individual who are weeding their days off faces far less problems then the ones drinking beer and booze .... and we have here in north europe a real "beering\drunking" culture. Sad but true : We even got a black light beer called "Piedboeuf" with 2.1 degree of alcool in it ... its for kids at lunch !

23 years, 4 months and 9 days without a drop of alcohol.

I'm not into any organized quitting program, I just happened to quit drinking on the Ides of March in 1982. That's how I can easily remember the date.

Almost same as that k_semler, everyday some days more than others. I only like beer though and usually I'm at the pub during the week.

I'm doing my bit for population reduction maybe, but not self limitation. Weed i'm sure is just as bad as beer and together they get you blitzed which is probably not a good thing. 8)

Wow...this is fascinating.

General thoughts on the resonses:

1) Yeah, I'd agree that weed isn't nearly as bad for your body as booze. Just look how you feel th enext day after smoking alot of pot vs how you feel after drinking > a bottle of wine. Only reason I don't smoke much anymore is that I live in the deep south and I don't like the paranoia involved in purchasing it or being under its influence when it's so illegal. Now if I lived somewhere that it was decriminalized? Oh, I'd definitely be smoking it.

2) fossil_fuel: try brewing mead. It's easy and awsome. Honey + water + champagne yeast + wait 8 months = good mead.

3)To all you daily drinkers, the strength of your livers is amazing. I drink 1 to 4 days a week at most, and I think I drink too much. But that's more of a concern for the size of my beer gut than anything else.

If you drink a lot, get down to the food supplement store and get some milk thistle extract for your liver. Valerian root to counter the hypnotic addictive effects (and hangovers and bad nerves). Dandilion root to clear out those nasty uric acid salts than settle in your knuckles. Hard core cases should try drinking Kratom leaf tea for a couple of weeks. That you can get on the internet. A good way to get off alcohol. Substituting marijuana for alcohol is not a good idea. Marijuana shouldn't be used for anything more than occassional use IMO. Bad for the mind and body and quite addictive. It can bring visionary info if used sparingly. Chronic use is definately a downer.

It leads to a lot of health problems when the years catch up. Not only that, but the buzz gets more and more unsatisfactory. Our friend K-semler has already noted that. The move to 'harder stuff' kicks in. Many find that the 'functioning' part becomes more and more doubtful. Alcoholism is a dangerous, serious problem that can kick your ass and destroy your will power. In that regard it probably is better to be a pothead than a full blown alkie. Some people carefully restrain themselves but rely on it more than they care to admit. Then at retirement they drink themselves to death in a year or two, not having any reason to restrain themselves and nothing in life they really care about more than a buzz. Probably behind Hunter Thompson's suicide is my guess.

The need to feed a pesky alchohol, cigarette, reefer or other habit could be a major liability in the meager times likely to follow peak oil.

I finally managed to kick cigarettes a few months before becoming peak-oil aware. Now I have an extra 4 bucks or so a day to help stock up on necessities and become mortgage free ASAP. Not to mention the advantages of better health to endure hard times.
