Nurse dead in Congo as Ebola vaccination campaign starts
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nati ... story.html
nurse has died from Ebola in Bikoro, the rural northwestern town where the outbreak began, as the country Monday begins a vaccination campaign in three health zones affected by the deadly outbreak, Congo's health minister said.

The nurse's death brings the death toll to 27. There are now 49 hemorrhagic fever cases: 22 confirmed as Ebola, 21 probable and 6 suspected, according to Health Minister Oly Ilunga.

"We have established surveillance mechanisms and are following all cases and contacts," he said. "The response is well organized because we have also put in surveillance measures at the entry and exit points of Mbandaka."

In a hopeful sign, two patients who were confirmed as positive for Ebola have recovered, and are returning to their homes though they will be monitored, Ilunga said. They have left the hospital "with a medical certificate attesting that they've recovered and can no longer transmit the disease because they have developed antibodies against Ebola," he said.....

Data from the recent West African outbreak even demonstrated the presence of EBOV genetic material (RNA) in the semen of survivors for up to 9 months after disease onset, with individual reports showing viral RNA persistence for more than 1.5 years (6,12,13). Detection of EBOV nucleic acid, however, may only reect the presence of residual viral RNA and therefore does not provide information about the presence of viable, infectious virions as well as the contagiousness of body fluids from survivors. Although in most studies the relationship between prolonged detection of viral RNA in semen and virus infectivity based on cell culture or animal models has yet to be determined, documented cases of sexual transmission of EBOV in Liberia and Guinea up to 470 days after onset of illness indicate that transmissible infectious virus can persist in the seminal uid for a longer time than previously recognized (12,14). While available epidemiological information indicates that sexual transmission is rather rare, sexual partners of male survivors can be at risk of contracting EVD due to virus persistence and seminal shedding of EBOV. This highlights the need for continued post-outbreak surveillance and preventive measure activities aiming at reducing the potential risk of sexual transmission of persisting EBOV

The Associated Press

May 22, 2018 05:19 AM

MBANDAKA, CONGO
Congo's health ministry has announced six new confirmed cases of the Ebola virus and two new suspected cases while a vaccination effort enters its second day.

A dozen health workers in the northwestern provincial capital of Mbandaka have received vaccinations as the impoverished nation tries to contain the deadly virus in the city of more than 1 million.

The health ministry says there are now 28 confirmed Ebola cases, 21 probable ones and two suspected. The death toll stands at 27.

Ebola Math

Exponential Function ( West Africa Outbreak)

So we have 49 * 1,12^t ; t = days := 30 days

=> ~ 1500 cases in one month (750 deaths)

=> 4 million cases in 100 days 2 million deaths

If they have really gotten the death rate down to 50% that is a huge advance. Initial death rates were from 90 to 95 percent. Going from almost certain death to a coin flip in just 25 years is a remarkable improvement.

Geneva, Switzerland - A deadly Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has a clear "potential to expand", the WHO warned Wednesday, as it reported seven more cases of the disease.

"We are on the epidemiological knife edge," Peter Salama, in charge of emergency response at the World Health Organization (WHO), told a special meeting.

"The next few weeks will really tell if this outbreak is going to expand to urban areas or if we are going to be able to keep it under control," said Salama.

The agency issued a new toll, saying there had been 58 cases since the outbreak was declared on May 8, an increase of seven over figures issued on Tuesday, of which 27 have been deaths.

One of the world's most notorious diseases, Ebola is a virus-caused haemorrhagic fever that in extreme cases leads to fatal bleeding from internal organs, the mouth, eyes or ears...

Two infected Ebola patients flee treatment center in Congo

Two infected patients who fled from an Ebola treatment center in a Congo city of 1.2 million people later died, an aid group said Wednesday while asserting that "forced hospitalization is not the solution to this epidemic." As the number of suspected Ebola cases continued to rise, experts emphasized that more community engagement is needed to prevent the spread of the deadly virus.Three patients left of their own accord from the isolation zone of the Wangata hospital in Mbandaka city between Sunday and Tuesday, said Henry Gray, emergency coordinator for Medecins Sans Frontieres, or Doctors Without Borders.

One patient had been about to be discharged, he said. "The two others were helped to leave the hospital by their families in the middle of the night on Monday. One of the men died at home and his body was brought back to the hospital for safe burial with the help of the MSF teams; the other was brought back to the hospital yesterday morning and he died during the night,"

Three Ebola patients left a treatment centre in the Democratic Republic of Congo after their families demanded to take them to church, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

Two of the patients later died, while the third returned to the centre in the city of Mbandaka.

This presents a new challenge for health workers battling to stop the spread of the contagious disease, says the BBC's Anne Soy in DR Congo.

Ebola has no known cure.

Health officials fear it could spread rapidly in Mbandaka, a densely populated city of one million.

Isolation is the main way to keep the disease under control.

Fear and suspicion hinder Congo medics in Ebola battle

“WE PRAYED FOR HER”
In one of the more alarming developments in the outbreak to date, family members of two Ebola patients removed them from an isolation ward in Mbandaka on Monday night, walking them out of the hospital before putting them on the back of motorcycles.

One was taken to a nearby evangelical church, according to health officials and a source at the church, where she - by now vomiting and unable to walk - joined 19 other people for prayers in a cramped tin-roofed building.

She returned to hospital before succumbing to the illness the next night. The other patient was taken home, where he died hours later, leaving health officials scrambling to locate their contacts across the city of 1.5 million people.

A witness at the church, who declined to be named, said the woman came to testify that God had cured her of her illness.

A few years ago there was at least one “Publc Service” billboard that was promoting washing hands after deficating. Not humor, dead serious.

I took it as a statement on our level of civilization and the public school system.

I recently bought two chocolate chip cookies. They were $1.50 each.
The salesperson had to use a calculator to figure out that they cost $3.00.

What can one expect at least here in the US, when our primary or basic education consists of memorizing by rote, the answers to multiple choice questions and when critical thinking is discouraged as teaching how to think is unheard of. Pretty pathetic.

Um, you see this all over the place, though it's often phrased as "wash hands after using the bathroom".

Public service announcements. Commonly, signs in restaurants. Commonly plastered all over hospitals, perhaps to make the patients feel better. I never see
my Dr. wash his hands before or after he sees me, even for a physical. So should I assume all Doctors wash their hands between seeing all patients, even though surely Doctors should know to do this? How about nurses?

I was almost shocked the time a surgeon thoroughly washed his hands in my dad's room, before seeing my dad and working on a wound he had.

To me, this isn't at all humorous, and due to the ignorance of the population, the problem is everywhere.

About 10 years ago, I started being careful about my hands in public. For example, consciously keeping them away from my face, and washing them well when I get home. Also avoiding touching doorknobs on bathrooms without paper towels where possible. And avoiding handling the public pens used to sign things in doctors' offices, at cash registers, etc.

If nothing else, I'm certain I get less than half the colds I used to get, due to that simple precaution.

I don't wear a mask at the doctors' office, but given the state of the waiting room in the winter, I'm tempted. I DO try to stay the hell away from patients who are clearly sick.
