$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('DomusAlbion', 'I') remember being this "smart" and arrogant when I was 21.

Yeah, me too. Though I thought I was more humble :P

But seriously, I think us "seniors" around here are largely not among the ones who decided to be yuppies and consumers and all that.

I don't feel too "senior" myself.

Yuppy. I haven't heard that since I was a consultant in NYC. That was the 80s.

About feeling your age: I'm convinced that much of it is mental. Sure the body does slow down and starts to fail but it’s all relative.

Both my wife and I are 55 and we're beginning a whole new life and I'll be gradually be transitioning to an entirely new career as a farmer. An old person couldn’t do that.

Humans (particularly women) live long past the age when they're generally reproducing for a reason: we evolved long before we invented writing. In a pre-literate culture, someone needs to stick around long enough to transmit traditions from one generation to the next. Otherwise, we'd forget how to do everything. As a new parent, I can tell you that we're too busy to transmit culture -- the grandparents will have to take care of it.

I'm with you, Dom, on the mental part. Working towards something similar for new career too, though I'm more hoping to become the local microorganism herder. 53 myself.

The point is more important that it doesn't matter shit what you do. You don't know that the first poster swallowed the blue pill do you? You only know where the culture went. What if the first poster is eco-hippie #1? How much difference did it make - and is he still responsible for the sins you say his generation committed?

So what about you? What correct choices are you making that will turn your entire generation in the "right" direction.

As a singer noted:

“I’m not as good as I once was, but I’m as good once, as I ever was.”

I don’t like Toby’s jingoistics but he and Scotty Emerick drank up a good line there.

Oh and Susan is 50, the kids are around 31, 28 & 25 - I guess.

Scotty's the real talent behind the act. I love Toby, but he's just the front man.

BTW: Our kids

32 - Realestate and father
29 - Motorcycle & diesel mechanic
22 - Retail manager and mother
16 - The punk, but looking forward to living on a farm (there's hope)

Probably. He's one of the most conservative kids I've ever known; a bit wild but he's signing up for ROTC in college and wants to serve. When he's all finished with his service and ready to settle (and assuming that the PO SHTF) his training could be very useful. 8)

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('stupid_monkeys', 't')here is a simple rebuttle to your arguments: survival =/= excess

rationalize it any way you want, but your generation specifically had a clear choice...and boy did you choose.

51.

Many of my generation "tuned in, turned on, and dropped out". Many of us marched in the streets in protest against the way things were being foisted upon us. Many of us chose to consume less and be nicer to the planet.

Heck, I was there when Earth Day was first celebrated in 1970.

But it seems to me that there was a juggernaut rolling along and most people just got swept up in its wake. I seriously doubt that most people of my generation saw a clear choice, let alone MADE a choice of any kind.

Life somehow just seems to happen.

It's easy, in retrospect, to look back and think, "there was the defining moment." But I remember the derision with which most people greeted Jimmy Carter's exhortation to conserve energy. And I remember the hoopla that brought Ronald Reagan into office to the tune of "Happy Days are Here Again!"

Most people didn't have a clue. And they just went on to live their consumptive lives.

The other day I asked my wife, "WTF ever happened to the Age of Aquarius?"

Damned if I know.

I'm with you Turtle. I for one did listen to JC and try to live accordingly, but in the end we do a lot because we're caught up in the paradigm set down by the generation before and the generation before that one and ...

Actually, I don't think it's quite here yet. Remember it was the "Dawning of the Age of Aquarius", but the stars are not aligned in that sign. We're still in the age of Pisces.

As to SM, it's easy to be self-righteous when your young and relatively free of sin. Given time he will be older and hopefully wiser. Well, at least older.

Time should solve some of this.

That must have been difficult managing a child at that age. I know I'm certainly not ready for such an undertaking, and have other things I'd like to do.
