Well I don't know about the lights on in LA, but power by oars and sails and wearing loin cloths seems about right :)

I still think the Red Sox victory one on Comedy Central is the best yet.

Subaru commercial

Unread postby alemoa » Thu 14 Jul 2005, 05:14:10

Has anyone seen the new Subaru commercial for its new SUV "B9 Tribeca" where all the other SUVs turn into sand to the song..."all we are is dust in the wind" and the speaker commenting - the end of the SUV...

 how fitting :P

They should get a bonus for sticking to "truth in advertising" (disregarding the pitch for their own best SUV)

that's how most of'em will end up in 10 years anyway. Unsold SUV's are already collecting dust in Stadium parking lots in Detroit now anyway. I think "Don't fear the reaper" is more appropriate.

Actually .. unwanted/underpriced SUVs are a good
overall value right now .. I can pay $25,000 for
a Toyota Prius and get 50 mpg or I can buy a
used Jeep for $3,000 and get 20 mpg .. the
$22,000 difference buys alot of fuel plus
you pay lower amounts in taxes and insurance ..

Triff ..

SUV sales are still strong in Houston since I still see many new ones with dealer temp. plates running around town. This town is horrible when it comes to SUV and truck % of all traffic. Once on a vacation to the northeast I was like "hey man where'd the SUVs go?"

Not really PO related but the I like the Tribeca. It hasa look to it that attracts me because I know that a vast majority of the people will think it ugly but I see something in it. It's sort of like the runt of the litter which you gotta love.

The did a total rip off of the Alfa Romeo front end with somewhat of a Porsche Cayanne stolen in there. That said, it has all wheel drive which many hard core looking SUVs lack unless people shell out 8-10 grand more for the 4x4 version.

Yeah, they will all be sitting rusting in a yard 10 years from now but if I were in the market for a minvan I'd get a Tribeca.

I've played with the idea of buying a 1997ish Toyota Landcruiser (the one with the in-line 6 cyl). The 98+ 4 cam V8 model is a toy for people with more money than intellgence.

Anywho, I considered getting one a few years ago to keep only 6 months to a year just to experience SUV ownership and be able to tell my grandkids I had one when we sit by the fire and they listen to an old man talk about automobiles. I'm glad I did not buy it....unloading one used would be very hard these days.

Larry, I notice the same thing here in Red State nirvana, Baton Rouge.

When I went to New Hampshire last summer to visit my in-laws, I thought "jeez, they actually have snow and hills here and most people aren't driving SUVs".

Here, there are no hills, no snow. Yet the number of trucks/SUVs is appalling in relation to the total number of vehicles on the road. Over 50%. And I'm not talking about CRVs here. I'm talking Suburbans, Excursions, F250s, HD 2500s, Avalanches.... Big hulking gas guzzlers. Lift kits and monsterous tires are also quite popular.

Maybe its a macho southern thing. You know, gotta have a big tough truck so everyone will know you;re not a whimp?

I've had other men criticize my car and say things like "real men drive trucks".

My response in one instance, as I smoothly shifted my Altima from 2nd to 3rd was "No, automatic transmissions are for women and zombies"... :) (no offense ladies -- this was a shot at this macho asshole -- it hit him just like I knew it would). My wife drives a 5 speed jetta TDI wagon, we're kindred spirits... :)

"REal men don't need a car to drive itself"... That argument was over right then.

Since nearly every truck/SUV on the road has an A/T I knew I was hitting this self-proclaimed macho man right where it hurt. In the last year he hasn't made another car comment, at least not where I could hear it.

HEHE. I envision myself getting 240+ miles out of my gov't allocated 4 gallons a month this time next year on my 93 Honda XR250L, rain or shine. :)

I think it is a part of the culture of the south to have a heavy truck or SUV to prove something. Every other part of the nation has more cars.

I agree with your post.

Oh, and BTW...women that drive manual shift vehicles have something to be proud of while men who can't drive them have something to be ashamed about. haha

Another SUV I really like is the Isuzu VehiCROSS. It was made only 3 years (99-01) and had everything standard (leather, 6 disc changer, 4x4, etc). It gets around 22 mpg and is the size of a sports compact car but just sits higher. It does not snow in Houston so I'd get one for the rarity and features. It looks like a giant toy truck and is not a generic cookie cutter SUV trash. Nothing else looks like this thing.

Here's one guy's web page on this SUV: http://www.wildtoys.com/vehicross/index.asp

There's a guy selling one in my town for $12.5K black on black leather with factory chrome wheels. New MSRP was $31K in 01. I'd buy it if I had the loot.

Might as well enjoy the fossil fuel party while it lasts.

IBM Commercial: "Change is coming, let us help you mana

Unread postby hoplite » Sun 07 Aug 2005, 18:12:03

Seems at least some of the corpocracy know somethings up; the sheeple don't. First the Chevron ad, now IBM with the cryptic "change" ad campaign. Something's up, that fer sure.

I have had the *pleasure* to work with IBM on a number of IT projects.

IBM should just admit they are an India firm now. Every project I've had to work with them on involves anywhere from 5-30 IBM India resources.

The really funny thing is that even though the customer thinks they are saving money up front the project normally takes twice as long due to remote software coming back either bug ridden, not implemented according to the requirements (performance and otherwise). By this time the customer management has already committed to the initiative and can't back out ;) So they have IBM India consultants come onshore for extended periods of time to fix the problems.

In all my years of IT I have never seen such straightforward medium to large size projects get so bungled up and take so long.
