I seriously doubt anyone will have everything they need in the case everything goes to poo. A valueable skill is definately best, no doubt that. However, I think it would be wise to have some things set aside as a rainy-day fund. Im not talking stocking-up like hoarding seveal thousand cartons of cigarettes in your basement, but having several hundred dollars worth of valueable items to barter in case, and proboly will, need them at some point.

I know what you are getting at Dustin, I’m not arguing – much, :).

The main problem I see with this type of storage is that it’s so hard to predict the progress or even the inevitability of a massive crash.

This is from the Food Storage Articles on the downloads page, the top ten of the…

100 ITEMS TO DISAPPEAR FIRST
· 1. Generators (Good ones cost dearly. Gas storage, risky. Noisy...target of thieves; maintenance ect.)
· 2. Water Filters/Purifiers
· 3. Portable Toilets
· 4. Seasoned Firewood. Wood takes about 6 - 12 months to become dried, for home uses.
· 5. Lamp Oil, Wicks, Lamps (First Choice: Buy CLEAR oil. If scarce, stockpile ANY!)
· 6. Coleman Fuel. Impossible to stockpile too much.
· 7. Guns, Ammunition, Pepper Spray, Knives, Clubs, Bats & Slingshots.
· 8. Hand-can openers, & hand egg beaters, whisks.
· 9. Honey/Syrups/white, brown sugar
· 10. Rice - Beans - Wheat

No's 2, 3, 5, some of 7 & 8 could be purchased wholesale and stored. But for example, if 10-20 years hence, I have a gross of lanterns in the basement and there are wide spread and frequent blackouts and oil of some type to burn, I’m good, otoh, if there is no affordable oil of any type to burn but there has been a massive wind power effort made and electricity is cheaper than ever; I’m stuck.

Same goes for wheat, it can easily last more than 20 years properly stored – and is a great thing to have as your own food store, but for trade – what if folks decide to quit eating much meat and grain becomes abundant and cheap?

Anyway that’s my $.02 (if its worth that).

I agree, Barter trade will play a great role in the post-oil ages.

Dustin, thank you for clearing that subject up. :)

For some reason, I doubt any precious metals such as silver and gold will be valuable for ages upon ages... :?

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Dustin', '1'). Silver and Gold.

I'm not sure about this: Apart from looking shiny these metals aren't very usefull, certainly not to someone eaking out a living on some fields. If I've got some bread to trade I'll be looking to trade for something like tools, other food stuffs or batteries for my torch. And unless I know someone with a heard of cows will give me some beef in return for one of those shiny things you've got it's useless to me.

A post so good it makes my skin all proprioceptive.
There'll be war, there'll be peace
But one day all things shall cease
All the iron turned to rust
All the proud men turned to dust
So all things time will mend
So this song will end

Just to point out, medicine and hand-powered tools will also be in demand. I can see most useful synthetic substances (nylons, paper, steel etc.) would be hugely valuable. Steel in particular, as it is impossible to make at home.

If you expect a Mad Max scenario then no, these metals are worthless. In a soft crash these will be more valuable than ever especially silver which has a multitude of industrial uses.

The BEST Barter Items to Stockpile for a Post Peak Collapse

Unread postby mmasters » Mon 15 May 2006, 18:41:55

I'm thinking items you could stock up on now/over the next few years tending to have long shelf lives that will be highly saught after when the economy falls flat. Therefore growing food wont be such a big burden when you have a stock of items which puts you at the high end of a barter.

For when it falls apart I'm thinking there will be a huge run on the liquor stores. Therefore stockpiling cases of good value vodka, whiskey and rum and other popular liquors is a good bet.

Later on:

Ciggarette rolling machines and rolling papers. People are gonna wanna smoke and rolling your own will be the most economical.

Personal products: soap, shampoo, condoms.

I'd imagine a lot of headaches and bowel problems adjusting to the new way of life, new eating habits and such. OTC and prescription medicines: Advil, pepto-bismol, etc. Seems it would be best to stock up on these when things are in free fall because of the shorter shelf life.

Any others yall can think of and why they would be good items to tuck away?

With all those bowel problems I would think toilet paper would be worth a mint!

Doh!

But as well, stocking serious amounts of toilet paper takes a ton of space and is not as portable as say a pack of toothbrushes. Seems it would be a prudent thing to stock up on for yourself though.

lots and lots of silver coins and lots and lots of bullets (along with the guns to shoot them) should take of it.

Rolls of window-screen and those little gizmo things to make new screens (less reliable air conditioning; therefore more open windows, with the added threat of more bugs caused by climate change).

The liquor will only work until people start to figure out what happens when you sprinkle some yeast into a container of sugary liquid and put it on a shelf for a few weeks.

Which makes me think - good brewing yeast will be worth it's weight in silver, if not gold.

Ammunition.

You can trade it, sell it, use it.

It will always get you food.

It can be used as a small unit of currency, a means of protecting your supply of food, a means of getting more food. God forbid, it can be used to get food by force.

Common calibers like .22 LR, 30-06, 12 gage, 9mm. These are currently very cheap. I figure that, like all commodities, it is inflation proof.

Unlike gold, ammo comes in small sizes convenient for exchange as a small monetary unit. It will always have value. It can be used by you directly. (if you have the properly sized close-ended tube). If you don't have it, it will be hard to get. (expensive)

Someday, humans will be back to black powder. (easy to make) Eventually, spears.

Before that happens, ammo for our current fleet of firearms will be a hot item.

Feminine Hygene (Tampons). Women will KILL for these if the time is right. I know, I almost died, once... Camping trip went bad...

Good thing to stock up on, though.

I'm not so sure about that, the standardized liquor brands are pretty heavily conditioned in the ego of the general public - they will most certainly foam at the mouth for it.

Quality brewing yeast, there's a thought! I'm sure a local supplier of that would do quite well.

Never thought of that. SS will be IMPOSSIBLE to make without electricity.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('pstarr', 's')olar panels
batteries (lead acid? lithium? do they store well?)

You can store a dry lead acid battery for a long time. Maybe forever. All you need is sulfuric acid to turn it on. Sulfuric acid is pretty easy to make with very rudimentary apparatus.

Peak PMS. lol something to keep in mind

As for popular ammo, can definitely see its weight in gold, especially in places like West Virginia and game hunting locales.
