Hundreds of people may've been exposed to MERS in Orlando

MERS #2 spent 4 hours coughing in a busy hospital waiting room until he could be seen. He then spent 8 hours being examined by numerous healthworkers and in a conventional hospital room before the staff realized he was from Saudi Arabia and they moved him to an isolation ward.

The hospital announced they are changing their procedures. They will now immediately ask sick people in the waiting room if they are coming from Saudi Arabia.

Should be okay, doesn't sound like it's extremely contagious, unless it mutates of course.

Patient 0 in Orlando is improving, and the two healthcare workers that treated him tested negative for MERS:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')wo health care workers who came in contact with the Florida patient later went to an emergency room with flu-like symptoms. But they tested negative for MERS in a state test, the CDC said Wednesday.

The Florida MERS patient, specifically, was fever-free and continuing to improve Wednesday while undergoing treatment at Orlando's Dr. P. Phillips Hospital, the state's health department said.

At this point, MERS appears to not be very contagious.
The patient in Indiana is better and has been released.

Yes, it is critical we develope a treatment. No, it isn't "Planet of the Apes" time.

Of course, the virus could always mutate into a strain that is more contagious. So this is very serious but lets not go screaming into the night quite yet ;)

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('pstarr', 'S')till logic, it is spreading at a terrifying rate. We had ONE CASE two week ago, and now we have TWO cases! And they are all dropping like flies. A third was even cured and released, and is shopping at the mall now and could be infecting EVERBODY!.

If they aren't feverish or coughing then they aren't infectious, no?

Ya I agree it's a scary one, but OTOH, the doctors on the TV say that it's not easily transmissible. You need some close contact like what a healthcare worker would be having, versus just sitting next to someone.

The Orlando patient was an American healthcare worker in KSA.

Keep fingers crossed, hopefully it's like SARS and all that and it never goes widespread over here to where we actually have to worry about it.

South Korean authorities have ordered nearly 2,000 schools closed nationwide to prevent the spread of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS).

As the death toll rose to nine and the number of confirmed cases of MERS rose to 103 on Wednesday, Al Jazeera's Harry Fawcett, reporting from Seoul, said a deputy prime minister told people with MERS symptoms to not present themselves at hospital.
Instead, they were told to contact authorities.

So trying to spread FUD and fear of doom about Ebola didn't pan out, so now MERS is the next attempt?

I guess if doomers keep chanting "the end is near" long enough, eventually they can proclaim "See, I was right!" At least broken clocks are right twice a day.
Given the track record of the perma-doomer blogs, I wouldn't bet a fast crash doomer's money on their predictions.
