I'd say the world is a better place without Stalin and the USSR. It's a slightly more dangerous place, but at least large parts of the world now live under freedom (Poland, Hungary) rather than tyranny.

No, No. You have it all wrong.

The point is, ladies and gentlemen, is that greed--for lack of a better word--is good. Greed is right. Greed works. Greed clarifies, cuts through and captures the essence of the evolutionary spirit. Greed, in all of its forms--greed for life, for money, for love, knowledge--has marked the upward surge of mankind.

Very well, the world would be a better place without the Communist Ideal. Or, more broadly, the world would be better off without Authoritarians of any kind.

the world would also be a better place without the moon (it's sorta annoying to have that stupid thing flying around us anyway, screw the tides). That way, instead of trying to beat the Soviets up there, we could have been listening to Hubbert and become a more sustainable country.

I think we need real leadership on this issue. We need people who feel that way to set an example for everyone. Show us the way and begin the process by depopulating the world by at least one person. Yourself or someone else, you make the call.

Don't worry this will happen without leadership.

I do my part by eating chocolate/other cash crops and by not giving to food aid charities.

I figure I've probably taken out as many as 10 people this way.

As a PO Desperado, I would just like to reiterate that I think humans are fine and dandy.:-D

It's our dominant culture that I am not quite so keen on ...

I happen to agree with the concept that human beings are the problem, but perhaps I feel this way mainly because I feel that people are inherently evil, self serving, and individualistic with no real sence or understanding of the concepts of community, charity, or conservation.

(The above applies to myself too, so don't go off thinking that I have the notion that my excrement doesn't stink)

As the poll stands, I cannot techincally answer the question. I do not believe there is any way at this point to make the world a better place. It may by chance become better (I figure low probability and a long time in the future) but we cannot "make" it better as the poll suggests (all of the options are things we can try to "will" into existence).

I know saying humans was negative and controvertial.
I had just come from watching Bob Geldof and the plight of Africa and the French testing nukes near the Polynesians without any regard to their health or safety and I wondered if humans would ever be able to live in harmony on this earth without suffering. Sometimes the sheer amount of disrespect, selfishness, greed and arrogance of people makes me despair.

Bah,

Philosophy from MOVIES?

DESIRE is good, GREED is an EXCESS of desire, in excess of what is GOOD and right.

unless you have a better definition for Greed, I say it is EVIL.

Other = ALLEGED GODS

Alleged gods are the basis for more hate, killing, raping, abuse & debauchery then any other cause by a long-shot.

I read somewhere once that there is a theory that all human actions including benevolent actions are motivated by self interest. I scoffed at it at first until i really thought about it. Unfortunately, now I have to agree.
