I too agree with Specop although I have a slightly different take on it.
To me the thing that has weakened the moral fibre of the Western World is not so much liberals as the corporate mass media.
This has been achieived in a number of ways.
The first is by feeding people a non-stop diet of fear: "the young black males, the hippies, the criminals, the arabs, the right-wing militias, the KKK, the Peak Oilers, the Martians, the Daleks, are going to break into your house one night and kill you."
Decades of this fear-mongering is deeply demoralizing and by spreading hopelessness and distrust of others makes effective combinations against the overbearing state and its corporate masters harder to bring about.
This no doubt is the intent.
The second way is by the use of mass advertising to turn people from indigant citizens into pampered, passive consumers. Advertising tells people that a soft, easy life is their birthright and focusses them on attaining it. It also pushes the subliminal message that "everything is basically all right."
What could make people less suited for collective political agitation than this?
Finally by discovering how to manipulate people mass advertising has provided a means by which the politicians can get people to accept almost any lie they want to spin.
It is a cliche that politicians are sold like soap-powder but few realise just how insideous this truly is. You don't need secret police and concentration camps any more, you just colonise weaken and degrade the popular mind with continuous consumerist propaganda and fear-mongering.
Welcome to Friendly Facism, corporate style.
Coming to a country near you.
