The city of Detroit appears to be on the verge of being taken over financially by the state of Michigan. As expected, liberals and labor unions are crying the usual fouls and predicting the usual calamities that will befall what was once the nation’s fourth largest city.

Detroit simply forgot the most basic rule of cities. The benefit of living in a city must be percieved by the people living there as outweighing the costs. It doesn't matter what I think about living in a city, it matters what the people living there think. When the City Government forgets that first rule they start discouraging citizens from living in their city completely without malice or forethought.

Starting in March, the Detroit Water and Sewage Department (DWSD) sent out shut-off notices to 46,000 homes for overdue bills, arguing that people can afford to pay, but refuse.... $75, the average monthly water bill in Detroit.....

Perhaps the government should start up a "water-stamps" program to pay for people's water.

We've got got food-stamps for free food, and housing vouchers for free housing, and Medicaid for free medical care, and Obamaphones for free telephones----why not water-stamps for free water?


Perhaps Obama should start a federal "water-stamp" program so people can get free water!
