A bit of buzz suggests a good bit of the Patriot Act was written by Uncle Joe.

Heard a bit on this on NPR the other day.

Seems like Obama is still threatening veto.

Any updates on this passage?

Internment/Resettlement (I/R) Specialists in the Army are primarily responsible for day-to-day operations in a military confinement/correctional facility or detention/internment facility. I/R Specialists provide rehabilitative, health, welfare, and security to U.S. military prisoners within a confinement or correctional facility; conduct inspections; prepare written reports; and coordinate activities of prisoners/internees and staff personnel.

Some of your duties as an Internment/Resettlement Specialist may include:

Assist with the supervision and management of confinement and detention operations
Provide external security to confinement/corrections facilities or detention/internment facilities
Provide counseling and guidance to individual prisoners within a rehabilitative program
Prepare or review reports and records of prisoners/internees and programs

They are going to provide "counseling and guidance" to internees. Isn´t that lovely?? 8)

The NDAA itself is the annual DOD spending bill.

The amendment with the bad language was defeated as mentioned upthread.
ETA, but then reinserted

The white house threatened to veto the whole bill because of the military detention section right around the time I made the OP, I thought I posted that, maybe not...

I'm confused Pops. Not all that unusual.

I thought that the upthread post was about a different amendment.

Anyway, it was just Friday evening NPR was running the story, so if I'm confused so are they.

In as much as this whole mess seems to have been sparked by Tim McVeigh, I wonder if the powers that be consider for one minute that they created that guy. They trained him then they pissed him off. Are they so stupid as not to realize that once they trip the lever and start rounding people up and interning them that its going to be like Red Dawn. The blow back on this thing will be catastrophic.

Not a bad analogy. From the perspective of the person being shot into a ditch or rounded up into a barbed wire enclosure, I'm not sure if it matters if the jackboot belongs to a person who works for the Chinese government, the American government or the aliens in "V".

Considering that people like Jeffrey Immault from GE have basically said they don't consider themselves Americans, maybe the American people should treat the 0.01% like we would foreign occupiers.

Police employ Predator drone spy planes on home front

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'A')rmed with a search warrant, Nelson County Sheriff Kelly Janke went looking for six missing cows on the Brossart family farm in the early evening of June 23. Three men brandishing rifles chased him off, he said. Fearful of an armed standoff, he called in reinforcements from the state Highway Patrol, a regional SWAT team, a bomb squad, ambulances and deputy sheriffs from three other counties.

He also called in a Predator B drone. As the unmanned aircraft circled 2 miles overhead the next morning, sophisticated sensors under the nose helped pinpoint the three suspects and showed they were unarmed. Police rushed in and made the first known arrests of U.S. citizens with help from a Predator, the spy drone that has helped revolutionize modern warfare.

But that was just the start. Local police say they have used two unarmed Predators based at Grand Forks Air Force Base to fly at least two dozen surveillance flights since June. The FBI and Drug Enforcement Administration have used Predators for other domestic investigations, officials said.

"We don't use [drones] on every call out," said Bill Macki, head of the police SWAT team in Grand Forks. "If we have something in town like an apartment complex, we don't call them."

The previously unreported use of drones to assist local, state and federal law enforcement has occurred without any public acknowledgment or debate.

Wouldn't it be great if we had a 100,000 "Dexters" in this country targeting authoritarians?

I think its amusing how they justify all this crap as "protecting Americans from being killed by terrorists" when their best shot killed 3,000. When you compare that to 600,000 Americans who died in the Civil War, obviously the PTB don't give 2 shits people "dying for freedom".

So why are 3,000 dead Americans an excuse for giving up freedom? If Americans really have devolved into such chicken-shittery, then we as a country deserve a 5-mile wide asteroid strike and extinction.

How many people do certain corporations kill with cancer by pollution? Millions?

The Congressmen who voted for this crap need to be put on trial for treason against the Constitution, found guilty, lined up, and shot to death by firing squad or hung from trees. Ditto on their lobbyist "Johns". I'd love to be on that jury, and I'd volunteer to tie the knots.

I wonder how your average soldier feels about defending freedom abroad while their civilian leadership legislates it away. I'd support a temporary military coup to restore a democratic government free of money (public financing).

A little HA-HA for you all- and oh so fitting right now.

A driver was stuck in a traffic jam on the freeway outside Wash.,DC.
Nothing was moving. Suddenly, a man knocks on the window.
The driver rolls down the window and asks "What's going on?" ...
"Terrorists have kidnapped Congress, and they're asking for a $100 million dollar ransom; otherwise, they are going to douse them all in gasoline and set them on fire. We are going from car to car, collecting donations."
"How much is everyone giving, on average?" the driver asks.
The man replies "Roughly a gallon."....

Just look at which presidential candidate gets the most money from our soldiers, and you will have your answer. Hint, he is the only candidate that actually served in the military.

There you go...
Obama signs defense bill despite 'reservations'
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'H')ONOLULU (AP) -- President Barack Obama signed a wide-ranging defense bill into law Saturday despite having "serious reservations" about provisions that regulate the detention, interrogation and prosecution of suspected terrorists.

The bill also applies penalties against Iran's central bank in an effort to hamper Tehran's ability to fund its nuclear enrichment program. The Obama administration is looking to soften the impact of those penalties because of concerns that they could lead to a spike in global oil prices or cause economic hardship on U.S. allies that import petroleum from Iran.

In a statement accompanying his signature, the president chastised some lawmakers for what he contended was their attempts to use the bill to restrict the ability of counterterrorism officials to protect the country.

Administration officials said Obama was only signing the measure because Congress made minimally acceptable changes that no longer challenged the president's terrorism-fighting ability.

"Moving forward, my administration will interpret and implement the provisions described below in a manner that best preserves the flexibility on which our safety depends and upholds the values on which this country was founded," Obama said in the signing statement.
