How warm is your computer room?

Unread postby k_semler » Sat 28 May 2005, 00:31:11

Like the title says, how warm is the room where you keep your computer compared to the rest of your house? Mine is now at 84 degrees farenhiet, and the rest of the house is at 71 degrees. I have the central air on, and the blinds pulled, and it is not really helping. I'm sweating my ass off in here.

The house is 74 degrees...so is the computer room...despite all the junk I have running.

It's only a few hundred watts....

(Hmm. I wonder how many indentured servants I need on bicycles to keep up my energy lifestyle?) 8O

Well, I figure I could output 12w per hour, (using the example of the bicycles at Dworshack Dam Tourist Center), so it would take me about 41.275 people just to run my computer for one hour.

Thats strange, because its currently in the upper 50's in my computer area/room. Its dependent on what the outside temp is...anywhere from low to mid 50's in winter to 90F+ in the summer. Right now its right around 50F out and i haven't had the heat on since early April.

I've got a jacket on! Just a notebook computer in here :)

Mine is about 21 degrees centigrade (I prefer the older term) or about 70 degrees fahrenheit
and cooling down along with the rest of the house.

My computer room does not heat up more than the rest of the house. But, it is on the shady side.

I had an extra layer of sound deadening material added to the walls of my computer room, and I had the walls insulated with fibreglass batts. I have dual-pane windows on it too. There is one old K6 computer running a website that is on all the time. That single computer is enough to keep the room 2-4 degrees warmer than the rest of the house year round. In the winter I am comfortable in there while the heat is off for the rest of the house. I have a Watts-Up and I have measured the K6 computer - it draws 85 watts. I probably radiate about that much too, so the room gets even warmer when I am in it. It is surprising to me that so little energy can heat a room. Insulation and tight air sealing are all it takes.

i dunno but between my body heat the computer's, and ambient temp.s there's a sweaty love triangel here!

Post PO warlordish thought - I'm going to need 41.275 slaves to run bicycle dynamos just the chew the fat with you guys? Given my nerdish nature and aversion to violence, how am I going to manage that - some sort of mindbending drugs perhaps, that I could work on...

K_Semler, on reflection I think your maths must be wrong, I seem to recall people running radios and stereos off 1 person static bicyles; and computers ought to be in that ballpark?

You should be able to run an efficient laptop using a one-person bicycle generator...

People, remember the wattage posted on the power supply is what it's capable of converting from A/C 120 (or 220 depending on where you are) to 12/5 volts DC. It's not what your actually using. Though I do agree that most of the power is used by the processor. 50-100 watts is typical for modern processors. If you want to be more efficient I would suggest using older technology. The trend has been to push more watts through the processor with a equal attempt to eliminate the resultant heat (huge heatsinks).

Otherwise a laptop. I'm looking at my laptop's PS and it states 19.5X4.62= 90 watts and I'm fairly sure it's not using half of the rated output.

I think in the future pending our energy problem we will see machines more closely modeled for thier purpose... i.e maybe I won't use my 3 gigaherz machine to surf the web... I mean how fast can I read? Certainly not faster than the processer can render it.

My walkman only takes .25w to run, one AA battery will power it for 6 months using it every day for 8 hours. My Sangean Radion takes 45w to run. One CFL in my home takes 32.5w to run. The mercury gas yard light takes 300w to run. My desktop computer takes 495.3w to run. My stove takes 1500w to run the small burner., My dryer takes 10500w to run. My generator only outputs 6250w per hour continoually.
