$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('PhebaAndThePilgrim', 'G')ood day all: I think what EOTWAWKI is trying to say is that their is a sense of schizophrenia to modern Christian thinking. On the one hand they fight to the death (no pun intended) to stay alive, but the religion teaches that heaven is a better place, and the ultimate goal of existence is to go to heaven.

I think you have modern/ancient mixed up. Prohibition against suicide, as well as acceptance (or offering up) of one's own suffering in life, are very old Christian thoughts, with modern times resulting in less of this pattern, rather than more.

All you have to do is look to the stories of the early saints to see it in play. A phrase that embodies this and comes to mind, St Paul referred to “making up for what is lacking in the afflictions of Christ for the sake of his body, that is, the Church" (Col. 1:24).

Being of this faith myself, the way I look at it, is that I certainly may not take my own life, nor will I turn my face away from what is to come; but there is also no need to fear, nor any obligation to pursue heroic means to extend my own life past its natural end.
Yes we are, as we are,
And so shall we remain,
Until the end.

Al Davis has passed away.

According to reports, despite what many thought of his handling of his team over the past decade, his mind was sharp but his body gave way.

His mantras of "Just Win Baby" and "Commitment to Excellence" will always inspire me.

I hope the Oakland Raiders get past this loss quickly and give Al's memory a successful season it so deserves.

RIP Al Davis, you were a man that was neither ahead or behind your times, but just right.

So does Mumar Gaddaffi (sp) count as a celebrity?
"That really annoying person you know, the one who's always spouting bullshit, the person who always thinks they're right?
Well, the odds are that for somebody else, you're that person.
So take the amount you think you know, reduce it by 99.999%, and then you'll have an idea of how much you actually know..."

I'm surprised that no one has updated this thread with the passing of Dick Clark. I heard the other day someone say that we can't have New Year's Eve without Dick Clark....hmmmm maybe they were right. lol

Author’s stories of nuclear fears and totalitarian regimes set a science fiction standard

Ray Bradbury, the author of classics such as “Fahrenheit 451,” “Something Wicked this Way Comes” and “The Martian Chronicles,” died Tuesday night in Los Angeles at the age of 91.
Bradbury’s daughter confirmed the death of the legendary science fiction writer to the Associated Press Wednesday morning.
Bradbury began his career writing science fiction for fanzines in 1938 and became a full-time writer in 1943. His major breakthrough as a science fiction writer was the publishing of “The Martian Chronicles” in 1950. The story of the effects of man’s attempt to colonize Mars after a massive nuclear war on Earth, the book reflected the anxieties over nuclear war in the 1950s and the fear of foreign powers. …

Yeah. Great - unparallelled - writer. Pity he became a complete nutcase in later life.

We have lost so many of the pioneering generation of astronauts now. Alan Shepherd, first American in space. Gus Grissom, 2nd American in space. Pete Conrad, commander of Apollo 12 and 3rd man to walk on the moon. Gordo Cooper, last man to fly a Mercury capsule. Even Sally Ride passed away last month. Now Niel Armstrong. The list is by no means complete, just the names that catch my attention because each of them gave me inspiration when I learned about them beyond the shallow media attention all astronauts get. I have visited the Niel Armstrong museum in Ohio a couple of times, it isn't a large facility so you can stroll it reading the plaques at the displays in a couple of hours.

Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are;
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.

Neil Armstrong's death hit me pretty hard. He was a very distant cousin of mine, but his death is also hugely meaningful to me in terms of his contributions to science and space exploration. In a way, it feels like the end of an era.
