$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('dsula', '')$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('nobodypanic', '
')2nd no capitalist entity will provide services in areas that are not profitable - so very small market areas, e.g., small town america, very rural areas, etc. could kiss the service they have been accustomed to for over a century g'bye.

I live rural, and yet UPS stops by frequently. I can even ask them to pick up the stuff I need to send.

and as long as you're willing to pay enough to maintain their margin, you'll have no problem. and they will charge depending on whether they classify you as living in a rural location or not.

the USPS, on the other hand, won't charge me to pick-up or charge extra to deliver my letters because i live in the middle of nowhere.

in fact, they are mandated to provide service regardless of location and at a flat rate (for letters): it'll cost you the same no matter where you are to send an equivalent letter.

i might be the one to cut yours, but i am a bit more compassionate than you so i think your time would be better spent in a re-education facility.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Fishman', '&')quot; The GOP is moving us into a post-apocalypse economy without the fuss of an actual crisis."

So you're saying, without even knowing it, the GOP is handling the post peak oil scenario, or "powering down" I think its called. Bravo.
We knew all along those living on unicorn dreams of hope and change would be clueless when the post peak oil "post-apocalypse economy " came along. Dang, reality sux
I'm saying they are giving us the chaos and mayhem minus the solutions.

Your illusion is there are solutions instead of chaos and mayhem.

Give us more of this power-down and make it snappy.

What's Obama's solution for the problems at the post office and in the economy in general? Obama's policies sure haven't fixed things so far.

Some people have been living in their own personal bubble of chaos and mayhem their whole lives, and all their actions are an attempt to suck other people into their orbit.

Needless to say, in any crisis these will be the ones that force themselves to the front and have the most negative influence.

Indeed. Every time I go to the post office I say "never again". They have the lights turned off
to save energy, there is one person at the counter and 10 people in line and the floors are dirty
because they have cut back on the cleaning staff. For a few bucks more, I go to the UPS store
and help feed a franchisee and his family working hard to make an honest buck.

"I'm saying they are giving us the chaos and mayhem minus the solutions" Sorry if the only "solution" you know is "spend more money". Remember the site is PEAK OIL, correlates with PEAK spending.

And this is just too easy
"Some people have been living in their own personal bubble of chaos and mayhem their whole lives, and all their actions are an attempt to suck other people into their orbit." Describes most of the folks who voted for our dear president, recipients of certain entitlements, etc.

"Needless to say, in any crisis these will be the ones that force themselves to the front and have the most negative influence" Like those who think spending more money will solve the problems, when there is no more money. Wow, a new motto POWER DOWN

Entitlements and Corporations

Unread postby beamofthewave » Mon 05 Sep 2011, 15:53:04

You really should tell that to the banksters, no more money, please. What a line, and the entitlement spending of the rich and the 600 million to the oil industry every quarter is not going to end Fishman so just give up whining about it. As much as you complain about it, it does not matter, the corporations and the banks are going to keep their welfare mentality and entitlement mentality and keep taking the trillions of dollars from the fed, a backdoor QE this time.

Power Down!!! WOOOOOOT!

Once a week delivery, just to keep the government related notices within a federal channel; should be adequate.
After bankruptcy of course, so that all those pesky union contracts can just go away.

Why wait for a crisis to do power down?
Yes we are, as we are,
And so shall we remain,

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Cog', 'G')ood. You can look at bills and pay them online. The utility of snail mail is rapidly becoming that of buggy whips.

Until somebody turns off the electricity or rolling blackouts are the norm. We just keep sticking our necks out a little further every year in our techno-whiz-bang life style.

Believe it or not there are still people with poor or almost no internet service. We let free enterprise decide whether or not to put a tower up or a line in and guess what, they've decided that the internet is not a priority for everyone. Not only that, internet service forces you to pay some kind of fee. Where the USPS only costs you when you need to send something.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Cog', 'T')he more government mooch class layoffs, the more I like the budgetary bottom line. Let those government workers try paying a big chunk of their medical and fund their own pensions like the rest of us in the private sector have done for years.

Better check your facts. US Postal worker's benifits are funded just like the rest of us in the private sector.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Cog', 'C')lose the postal system down and sell the remains to whoever wants to buy them. If something paper needs to go somewhere you can use Fedex and pay the real costs instead of subsidizing this failure any further.

The US Postal Service is arguably the most successful government agency in history. A massive system that manages to connect people everywhere across the planet at prices most anyone can afford. Something neither FedEx or UPS can boast about. When its gone it will be missed, but not for very long. See the movie " The Postman" again.

An apt illustration Lore. The Postman had an 80 million dollar budget, but only grossed 18m.
And did I mention I found it unwatchable? However, maybe I will give it another try in light
of all the doomers I correspond with.

That's the beauty of the service. If congress would allow them to raise rates they can go about continuing to fund themselves. The crux of the problem is with usage continuing to go down, so is revenue. So services will be cut for the foreseeable future and yet another pillar of our analog security is pulled out from underneath us.

I went to Europe last winter. Needed to stay in touch with the office, so I rented a sat
phone. I left the sat phone antenna in Finland by mistake. The client immediately shipped
it back to me, but it sat in a New York USPS customs impound for so long, over a month,
I ended up buying another one so I could return the sat phone & antenna. How come this
never happens at Fedex?

By the way, I was very satisfied with the Iridium sat phone. Cheaper than international
roaming, and always worked.

I've used Iridium sat phones for field work for years here in Alaska. Just used the new model last month during a science project in the Aleutian Islands. They always work great, even from inside a helicopter. Occasionally they won't connect if there is a cliff or mountain right beside you so the satellite coverage is locally spotty, but when you look around its usually pretty obvious what the topographic problem is.

I've never used one in a city---I bet the buildings can cause problems connecting with the satellites.
