That said, I think your statement here is incorrect, at least in as its applied to the big three in the West, and Hinduism/Buddhism/Shinto in the East. None of these religions require any great amount of accuracy of knowledge from their lay practitioners, in order to achieve heaven/enlightenment/peace after death. They can be *very* harsh and strict doctrinally for people claiming to be, or holding the positions of, instructor though. Basically, for the person that makes an effort, believes in God (or faith appropriate spiritual setting), tries to be helpful to those less fortunate, you're in the ball park. Now, if you want to debate, or argue with people about the details of Angels on Pins or the proper linguistic formulation to describe the Eucharist, or how the role of a Bodhisatva interacts with the physical world, you best know your s***, or their will be hell to pay.
