I never visit any place outside of Malaysia except Singapore and Thailand. However , I can said that the whole Singapore is doomed. They even imported water from Malaysia and Indonesia. However, the main problem is Singapore is based on non essential sector such as service sector, industrial and tourist sector. When peak oil come, they just cannot return to the farms. If natural gas supply from Indonesia is interupted, Olduvai will visit them.

Kuala Lumpur the capital of Malaysia is doomed too. The capital depends value-added and service industry too. There are no place to grow your own food over there. Kuala Lumpur is situated in Selangor . Actually it is Federal Territory.With the current dry spell, water level at major dams fell to 54% from full level. Last time in Melaka, the main dam dry up. ...

DC will do just fine until the Fed falls apart. We can't have an open riot in DC, it's a threat to national security. The military will be partially diverted to stopping rioting in key cities. DC comes to mind as one of those key cities.

Despite it's problems, it's heading for a Police State, not Anarchy. Well...A Police State would be worse in my book...

Doesn't look like it's been mentioned yet, but from what I've read, Lagos, Nigeria, would be a horrible place to be post peak. Sounds like the whole coastal area around there would be absolutely awful.

I, too nominate the city of Lost Wages to the worst place to be (in the US). The folks there, apparently have no clue. I blogged about this a few weeks back after the 2.7Billion dollar Wynn spectacle opened. Las Vegas has almost no prospects. Heck even the native americans steered clear of this area.

Never the less, I would recommend a trip there, pre-peak. Its out of this world.

Now here is a thought: the year is 2066 and fusion has been on the scene for almost 60 years now. (fantasy role playing here). To what absurd level will Las Vegas grown to?

Globally, almost any third world megacity will be a death trap. The dry ones will go first, but eventually all will succumb. Ironically, some rural third world "backwaters" will probably remain eminently survivable, if they are situated more than several days hike from the mega cities or are separated by severe topographical features. Those rural areas may have fewer people (due to emigration/migration) and a more subsistence level existence.

I wonder why not many mentioned San Francisco, it's the second most densely populated cities in the U.S.
But then again, there's alot of tolerance, and there's a really developed mass transit system. From BART subway, to muni, and those electric cable buses.

Outside of the major cities listed, I think those suburbs in the desert regions will take a beating as well. Think about those suburban towns surrounding L.A, they're out in the middle of desert, without fuel it's really hard to get anywhere, and without water sounds even worse. If you think the suburbs are horrable places, then I can clearly see those desert suburbs going before the rest of them.
