Hi Darren
I worked with Schlumberger. That is top of the food chain in this business. The training was super as was the quality of the equipment. A university degree was required for entry.
Entry level. From what I understand there are two paths in this business. Start as a laborer and learn a trade or get a degree. The two starting points could take you to the same destination but not necessarily.
With Schlumberger you need the degree.

Sorry but I have no idea how this looks at this level today. I do know that there is a shortage of TRAINED personnel. So some companies will probable take someone off the street and train them if the person appears to have the potential to do the job.
Best to get a start somewhere and then get a better look at how things look. To get the highest pay you need experience, that means working in as broad of a range of work in a given area. To get this you need to start and see how you like the work.
Good Luck
